How would I go about making engravings not look TERRIBLE.

I just engraved  a large portion of my fortress and it now looks like absolute ass, pardon my French.
Is there a mod I could get that would fix this?

You can select not to show engravings in vanilla, d > v. There is also a toggle in the d_init.txt file to do the same ([ENGRAVINGS_START_OBSCURED:NO] change the NO to YES) These makes them show as a variation on the smoothed look, not as good a look as I would like, but much better than the random icons.
