Haha, and of course they piped it in with ice blocks, why wouldn't they?

seriously though, it made me wonder why kitchens don't use any sort of fuel.  It would be a nice alternate use for charcoal, especially since there is plenty of wood these days.

I was just thinking of that too. Wood/coal/magma kitchens could be pretty easily modded in with reactions. The extra production/construction step would balance out the high value of prepared meals, too.

edit: It would also set up a kind of tug-of-war between food and fuel supplies when deciding to make easy, fine or lavish meals.

It would be cool if a meal with meat required charcoal. Maybe it's cooked somehow in teh butcher shop though.

One day it would be cool if all plant material meals were called Salads instead of roasts.

I can't see anybody in the middle ages wasting charcoal on cooking food. Sure as an option if you have some sitting around that you are sure you don't need, but the primary reaction would use basic wood.

And yes, this would be a nice detail. Although it's a bit of a drop in the bucket for a whole needed food overhaul, it would still work on its own to make things slightly more realistic.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

When I saw the topic my immediate thought was "magma kitchen!"

I was not disappointed. Thanks for the link.

maybe their definition of a roast is different from our definition of a roast?

"Roast" probably means "an excitingly multicoloured mush", seeing as everything is usually minced into oblivion. I expect they don't even heat it up or anything, just smash it and stir it together until it looks like one stack of food.

I always figured the butcher made it safe to eat somehow. That or dwarves have stomachs as strong as their livers and they can eat Yak Sushi or whatever without getting sick.

Considering the amounts of strong alcohol they consume, there is not a germ, parasite or poison that will make it through their system once ingested.

Maybe they use a natural fuel, like some indigenous cultures do. If they have cows they use their fuel, if not, there are other sources...

They probably have no idea what exactly a roast is but they heard the word from the humans once and to them it sounds like a fancy french word. So they call their fancy food "roasts".

I use charcoal now for grilling... though to be fair, it isn't slowly and tediously made by charcoal-burners out in a bog somewhere. Perhaps if I were to mod this in, a coal-burning stove would create "slow-roasted" meals of increased value, while wood- and magma-burning stoves would create meals at the normally calculated values?
Might be getting into the kind of distinction and micromanagement that Masterwork does, though. What do you think?
