What just happened?
« on: August 03, 2014, 06:47:25 am »

So I was trying adventure mode this weekend.
Died over and over again, but by far the most "fun" thing was a swordman, whose swordarm I cut off.
Thought to myself: "No more danger. Time to speed this up." and just pushed the cursor in his direction over and over again (does this still pick the attack with highest hit chance, or completely random?)
Suddenly this happened:

Was perfectly fine, then suddenly dead. Bronze Helm? Wayne?
Maybe ignore Weapons alltogether for my next run and go for kicker instead?

Rule #1 of DF: never assume your opponent cannot hurt you unless they are unconscious.

In most cases, a swift kick to the head will usually kill you unless you have a steel or addy helm.

Minor yet consistently lethal head damage has become more or less a staple of DF now. Older versions had fixes and workarounds so one punch or kick to the head wasn't an insta-kill, but the new combat system means the old fix is no longer useful, yet the same problem still persists.

Which still makes this game more realistic than most~

Alwaysalwaysalways remove the functioning of both arms and one leg before using someone as a training dummy.

I think you've tried to tackle Chuck Norris. Not a good idea :).
But yea, helmet should prevent this. I think this is a minor bug/balancing issue.

Kicking people in the back of the head seems to be very effective. I like to imagine that I'm curb-stomping suckas.

Sometimes even when dead.

From my experience it is usually easier for them when they're dead  :P

Hm, have you considered murder?  It's either that or letting it go.

Curb stomp does seem like a good way to describe what happened. I think you were still lying on the ground.

Not really sure why the helmet didn't save you unless it's not really a full helmet type of deal.

Quite true.  Once I killed a flying critter that was flying directly above me and its decapitated body struck me on the head, instantly killing me.

I don't know about that. It seems pretty inconsistent in v.4

Check out my thread here. I kicked that unconscious goblin at least 20 times in the head...on top of everything else.

Maybe goblins have different skull physics though. Try kicking an unconscious goblin in the head(simple strike, very square) and let me know if you get similar results
