Help! Keys do nothing in Adventure mode

When I fast travel, then get stopped because there are wolves or something all keys do nothing. Hitting ESC just brings up the save menu. No other keys do anything. This has occurred when 1: I was stopped by a pack of wolves and 2: I was stopped because there were about 40 undead corpses trying to kill me.
