Part 8 - Metalworks

Normally you would expect a smelter and thats it. Ore goes in, metal comes out. That is not quite true in MDF. You need three buildings. Smelter, Ore Processor and Slagpit. The smelter smelts ores. But the ores your miners dig out... they are just some heap of rubble with rocks and ores mixed. They have to be sorted first, which leaves you with too options:

You can smelt the "ore bearing rock", which gives little metal and lots of molten chunks of rock called slag.
You can process the "ore bearing rock" first in the Ore Processor, generating "pure ore" and free rock boulders/blocks.

Obviously the second option has a higher yield. And less slag in the end, less waste products. Slag clutters your smelters after a while, you may dump it or atomsmash it, but the mod offer a simple solution: A slag pit. This workshop destroys slag when it appears. Best to be build next to the smelter.

Bonus: Smelters can make crude anvils from 3 metal bars, so you no longer need to embark with them yourself. Here is how it looks:

So our miners and metalworkers do this:
Mine ore bearing rock.
Bring to stockpile next to metalworks.
Process the ore.
Smelt the pure ore.
Now we have metal bars (and free rocks/blocks side products from the ore processor)
Any slag created is thrown into the slag pit.

And now we have our brave humans standing next to a bunch of gold bars... saying now what? Traders dont accept lumps of gold. We need coins.

Interlude: Chicks and Geese hatched again. It is now summer, but damn. All those chicks went SPLOOOSH! all over the place.

Jackpot:

One of the geese is a golden goose. Literally. It lays golden eggs. We just have to wait till its an adult. But from now on the eggs go to the food stockpile, we have so many birds running around, its not funny.

You know what, if nobody else cares, I'd like to claim the guard captain equivalent and request the law be heavy handed - that is, none of the crossbow/bow nonsense, you get a "beating," you're gonna either end up dead or wish you were. Actual not-ranged weapons. Preferably swords. Makes for a nice incentive to not ignore a mandate/neglect a jail.

Part 9 - Migrants

Splint, you mean the Executioner? aka sword hammerer? There is the option of Sergeant (militia captian), Sheriff (sheriff) and Executioner (hammerer)

Jason, no engineer with those, so you have to wait.

Everyone else got their human.

The working skills are horrible. A peasant, a milker, another milker, a diagnoser and an ok mason. But the combat skills... all but one (sorry Rathgir) have 3 points in a weapon skills (sword, mace, spear and dagger) and 1 point in shield, armor and dodge.

Smake, you got the dagger liking adventurer type open to new ideas, hope that fits your character. You have 6 points in tracking as well.

And Pelinal, while you have the peasant (which is perfect to be a future squire), you are A BEAST! You are the only person with a kill in the entire fortress. Lord Conor tried chasing camels three times but never cought one... but you arrive on the map with one kill to your name, and proficient tracking skills... and what a kill that is.

PS: Your father is called Gadoc Outrageenjoyed. Nice name.

PPS: Rathgir and Pelinal are married, as are Smake and Saegge. Deal with it.

OCC: Sheriff it is. Will take a while.  Current waiting list: Jason (Engineer), Splint (Sheriff)

We have the most pimpest forge in the land. Two words: Golden. Anvil.

So we finally make gold coins. Golden Kruger Rand for all that I care, because it sounds like it.

Calimong Bumassa, King of Kalvarland. Suddenly I am not sure if our entire operation here is strictly legal. But the king wants his gold, so we better stay here and work. Say, arent glumprongs these evil undead flesh trees that grow on dead grass in region with regular blood rain? Thats his symbol? Alright.

His Uselessness advice is useless. Of all the things, the cooks? We dont even have any cooks. Or farms. Or hunters. We have eggs and fish, thats it. :P

I am honstely questioning if we are fighting for the good guys. The caravan just arrived, "escorted" by 3 guards. I say "escorted", because it looks more like the guards making sure that the merchants dont run away, and not for protection. Their leader wears this helmet:

Quote

This is a ashland glass helm.

On the item is a rendition of a masterfully designed  image of voodoo poison.
The image is the symbol of The Smiling Nation, a human civilization.  It is made from gargoyle bone.

The Smiling Nation sounds a bit totalitarian. Slightly. Take some of this voodoo powder in your drink every day, and you will smile through your workday. If you dont, take a good look at my crest. I went to the most evil region, looked for the most gruesome enemy, killed it and used its bone to make it. Now what do you think would happen to you, if your trades dont bring us a profit?

My vote goes for the mason's guild. Seems whatever I do in Masterwork as dwarves always needs more masons, so I'll assume those rules hold even truer when we're doing building rather than carving.

And on the Smiling Nation...I agree. I may very well see about making a sketch of that helm, and perhaps the coin too.

Part 10 - Map Overview

It is autumn now. We have traded with the merchants, getting rid of stone crafts. Meph is a legendary stonecrafter and churns them out rather quickly. We did buy a pig, a breeding pair of goats, 100 drinks, 200 foodstuff and some wooden barrels and buckets.

We minted 12.000 coins in the meantime, which we invested in a breeding pair of dogs at the pets merchant (5000 gold), bought a masons permit (1000 gold) and a masons guild upgrade (2000 gold), and bought 30 new basalt boulders (3000 gold) for blocks.

Spoiler: Map (click to show/hide)

1. Our entry. A 10-tile bridge that can be raised from the dining room lever.
2. A cloud of blinding sand. Yeah for dunes. Several humans have damaged eyes at the moment.
3. Merchants. 14 traders and the depot.
4 & 5. The two houses that have 3x2 rooms for each fort member.
6. Metalworking area and mining shaft.
7. Food area, nestboxes, birds, butcher, tanner, food stockpile.
8. Almost finished the wall, just a few blocks left.
9. OUR FIRST GUILD! The Masons Guild.

Golden anvil, so stylin.
I vote for masonry as well because, since humans are even smarter than dwarves, they should know how wonderful stone is even moreso! you posted right before I did. Oh well.

I'd also ask to be added (girl), preferrably a child so I can be annoying as possible.

Hey, add me in please. No real preferences, tough something interesting would be good, whatever that means I leave open to your interpretation.¨

Also; bitchin anvil.

Although it gotta be pain in the ass to use properly, what with gold being so soft and whatnot. But I guess that is humans for you; bling before practicality.
