So, I created a rather old pocket island world with 2500 years of history, and set off for my first embark site, on top of a cave by the ocean.
Recipe for Fun.

When I arrived, I was on top of a dwarven campground:

...hosting apparently the remnants of my entire civilization (who all hate me.)  I didn't notice right away until my first (and only caravan) showed up with 3 wagons and no liason, then my expedition leader claimed to be the Queen, then I noticed the caverns under my fort being completely full of barons and generals:

I predict relations will be strained.
More to come when I dig into legends.

Edit1:
Will still get to delving into the legends, but I've come up with a grand plan for this evening after work:
I'm going to have to try to cave in my cavern level and smash all the remaining nobles just to see if I can get one of my dwarves to appoint himself outpost liason and try to send a caravan to himself.

This is truly amazing.
Fortunately I don't have to worry about visiting "dignitaries" going hulk on me, as the only "neighboring" civilization is living in my sewers.

So the last site owned by the civilization was wiped out by goblins in the year 72...

Update:
I am a monster.  Or a dwarven scientist.  Probably both?

I had stopped getting migrants and realized that it was because the feral remnants of my civilization down in my basement counted against my hard population cap, and developed an appropriate solution:

Fortunately, the cave level isn't too far down (about 78 levels) and doesn't open up until near the bottom of the world, and then immediately flows off the map.  Piercing an aquifer thus isn't too much of a drain (ha! I jest) on my performance.

This has met with considerable success:

I've been getting regular migrants at the scheduled times again now, which is a definite improvement. Also all the mud I've been creating is going to make my wood industry amazing.

Interestingly, the dwarven caravans seem to be coming every year again, and claim to be sent by The Fortunate Banners. This doesn't seem likely, since the outpost liason is currently treading water inside an air pocket in a sump, I AM the mountainhomes, other Dwarven cities were wiped out 2400 years ago, and we're so far out in the backwaters of civilization that even the kobolds and goblins haven't visited us in 2 years.

This has, however, produced a complete halt in the productivity of my craftsdwarf workshops, as all four of them are now cranking out memorial slabs to the CHUDs who keep drowning down below.

So far I have not managed to claim the lives of the wily outpost liason or any of the nobility (as far as I can tell), however some further monstrous science on the surface has demonstrated that I can send my military after individual dwarves and the others don't care at all.  No wonder the goblins of The Virginal Hatred had no trouble wiping them out repeatedly.

I'll be attempting two pieces of science here: I'm going to wipe out all of the hostiles except a single baroness (if possible), then retire the fort once migrants bring the population level (and the fort's food production) up to a decent level.

I'll then take a look at the legends mode export and see if everybody on the site has the same entity population id.

Then unretire and see if the baroness is now part of my glorious civilization or if she's still living down in the sewers eating crocodiles and bringing down the overall classiness of the joint.

Edit:
Lab report: CHUDs remain CHUD-dy after unretire.

Making some progress wiping out the remnants of my civilization.

The fallout from this is that:
  • My dwarves don't care that they're killing other dwarves, and thus this isn't going to dissolve into a tantrum spiral.
  • It doesn't seem possible for your civilization to suddenly inflict roles like General, Duchess, Baron, Outpost Liason, etc on any of your innocent fortress dwarves.
  • The goblins are simply not coming, so I need to accumulate some more wealth and see if I can make a proper mountainhomes out of this.

I was originally going to do something ill-advised with this site, like drain the ocean into an aquifer and build a glass city under the sea or inhabit the caverns exclusively, but now I think I want to build up this site's wealth, then retire the fortress and start another city with the same civilization at a nearby site and see if I can change history.  I think this means that, in the game of Dwarf Fortress, Toady won.
