I do like the idea of filling several kilometers with !!SCIENCE!! Also how large are the caverns in the third dimension?

I dunno. Big.
Haven't really been keeping track of the 3rd dimension for the map, since its always 2d.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Just asking cause we apparently are just this giant meter-thick sheet of crystal. Might want to use some of that space.

We could use some of the space, but I have no idea how to make the map 3d in the first place. I've just been going on the assumption that we do expand in 3d, its just not on the map because the map is 2d.

How? Are our crystals just ridiculously long? As for 3dness just add a second layer map. Once we use that layer we can switch sides until we hit the walls.

I honestly think it doesn't matter enough, I kinda like the 2d representation, honestly. Simpler and easier, too.

I assume you mean just add a second layer perpendicular to the current map. Unfortunately, 3D doesn't actually work like that; it's about as effective at conveying 3D space as gluing a cross-section of Mt. Everest to a map of the Himalayas is at representing the geography of Asia. You'd need successive layers along all axes to make it 3D, which is way too much work for one person and one forum game, not to mention it's difficult to visualize anyway. This, incidentally, is why most pixelated games are either top-down or side-scrolling. Much like video games, Akylon would need to switch to 3D graphics to make a truly 3D map. And, well, speaking as a lurker who mostly just enjoys watching what happens rather than actually playing when it comes to this game-- I don't think it'd add much. Area and location doesn't play a huge role, so it wouldn't affect the gameplay. It would add a ton of extra busy work for Akylon, however.

EDIT: Also, I think I recognize your name and avatar. Do you also frequent the MSPA forums, perchance?

Aside from the layers in all directions thing (which I hadn't thought of), Deep Waters pretty much pointed out why theres a good reason I use paint.net over say, sketchup for the map ;)

What's with the question mark? I certainly am not a robot! :P When it comes to forums, I mostly just lurk, and I go by a different name on both sites anyway. I only started wandering back through the forum games sections recently, though, so I was very surprised to see your name pop up in two different places. It's good to see someone from good ol' MSPA around here.

Anyways, back to lurking now. Wouldn't want to derail the thread too much.

Cycle 68

While experimenting with different levels of visual zoom (among other minor enhancements trickling out of Core Research), you notice the fidgeting arcanist wrote something down and left it off to the side of the tables and chairs.

Quote
YOU! WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH THAT MANA BEAM! PUT THAT BACK! NOT YOURS!

Also damn and blast emergency runecasting. By the time I had recovered and reasserted myself within this apprentice, I end up stuck down here in your little improvised trap. Do you know how much that bolt of yours hurt to get hit with? Granted, you shot through the runes it'd triggered so maybe it exaggerated things, but by the Way it damn hurt. For a week! I haven't felt something that bad since I tried to tame one of the Ogri. You know, the monsters you don't know about that resist magic and shattered my whole arm while throwing me out of their territory and eating my backpack. The entire thing, including the inedible containers and metallic objects.

I bet they'd try to eat you too, if they ever bothered to come away from that mountain.

You wave the beam back over there for a moment in a hopefully insulting fashion and he quickly stuffs the paper back into his robe. So, Volz survived by killing his apprentice via runes he'd inscribed on himself; one of them, at least. You aren't sure if that makes him exceptionally prepared or just highly paranoid of assassins. Either way, you note which one is him and listen to the arcanists as they speak towards the ceiling.

...and so, despite Lon's objections on the grounds of you being evil for trapping us here, and Zov's crazy insisting that you came from the heavens despite being deep in the ground with no obvious hole above us, you aren't an Outsider at the current time. Now give us some food.
You haven't done anything other than theological arguing. We did not trap you to listen to a debate. We trapped you because of the magic teaching potential.

They all sit back down on the chairs, and a few of them pout. Zov the fidgeting one glares at you. Eventually one asks you what sort of magic you meant and starts spinning something around on the table.

In the meantime, 18 more forgite is assumed full control of and a new research sector is started up.

Can we get a general overview of what the shit magic is? The arcanum, the crystals the runes. We don't need to know how to do it just yet , just what it is and how it works. Give them food in return.
