The story of Kogan "The Survivor" Tathzuntir
« on: July 29, 2014, 09:37:40 am »

Since v0.40 was out I stopped playing my old v0.34 saves. So, today, I thought I should revisit my old fortress just to see how I left it. Save loadd and I noticed I left everyone hungry when I left. I tried to help, but it was already beyond salvation and, short after, the Tantrum Spiral had started.

Things got really bad: dwarves went insane and started killing each other, so for the sake of fun I tried to flood the fortress with magma (it was a volcano), but it didn't really worked.

My fortress was almost dead. And then I noticed a brave child named Kongan Tathzuntir. She was fighting a berzek farmer and it was a tie. She was unconscious, exhaust and suffered of extreme pain. The berzek was just standing there, looking at her, tired and dehydratated. I just didn't knew what would happen.

And suddenly, they came: 35 dwarfs, mostly farmers, fishery works and childs, arrived. They occupied the almost-destroyed fort and rescued the child. The berzek stood there until he died of thirsty (it didn't took much time) and the fortress has refused to die. Just like that child, that's now know as "The Survivor".

So, the point is: what should I do with that child? Should I honor her with a life of no work? Should I make her a Hammer Lord designated to crush the head of anyone who goes insane? Should I make her a chief medical dwarf so she can heal anyone who gets hurt like she did? Should I make a megaproject in her honor? Or maybe I should just throw her in the magma-flooded pit downstairs and abandon the fortress in the name of Armok?

What should I do now, folks?

Give her an artifact, and let her become a master... whatever she wants to be.

No dwarf could ask for more from life than mastery of the craft of their choice.

Managed to heal her wounds already. She had a major injury on one of the lungs.

Her Toughts-screen:

(Note that she's happy because of DFHackthe work of a wonderful psychologist)

How can I make she get an artifact? The only way I can think of is letting it get really sad near a butchery.

No.  ASSIGN her an artifact.  Either in her room, to wear, etc.  If she wants to be a military dwarf, as armor or weapon, etc.

Make her captain of the guard/sheriff and let her punish all the evil doers in the fortress.

I can't appoint nobody to anything because there's no expedition leader yet. That's temporary, right? I can't make an army and I seized everything out of an elven caravan lol

Update:
Another dwarven child is in a strange mood. I didn't even know it was possible.

Yeah, children randomly go into strange moods and if they succeed, they'll seriously level up in whatever skill they used. Which activates the skill and makes them into child labor.

No it doesn't - even if children complete a strange mood and become Legendary, they won't actually perform that labor until they grow up to become Peasants and allow you to enable it yourself.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Or until they arrive as an immigrant at a different fort, and get their skills turned into labors by the [SET_LABOR_LISTS:SKILLS] tag.  Except that apparently this no longer happens in 0.40.05.

Sorry, I've been out for a time!

Now, I just came here to finish the story:

So, after that saving wave I just worked things out, as I should. I focused on expanding my fortress and defending it of a siege. I couldn't make an army because I had no expedition leader to point it out. Not big deal, I just had to wait for it.

Well, it took me way more than I expected, and something that I didn't count on happened:
I've got sieged by a necromancer.

Now, beyond the hope of making an army and knowing the siege wouldn't be leaving soon I had to work around with food and drinks. I had around 70 meat, a good water reserve in the well and a lot of seeds, so I didn't got too much worryed about hat. I've got two artifacts: a figurine (that kid, from before the siege), a throne (after the siege started).

When the "wet season has arrived!" I discovered it was just as dry as the dry season, and after some time my well got dry. I assume I was incompetent with the farming, and also my plump-helmet farm was destroyed by the magma (when I didn't know Kogan would survive and tried to flood the fortress with magma just for fun before It crumbled). Then, every animal that hadn't died from hunger (no grass left) became a pet for some dwarf.

One dwarf tried to make an artifact, but he needed bones. I couldn't kill any animal, and I couldn't open the gates neither. So, I checked his status and he was some sort of cool guy, who would prob get melancholic if he couldn't get some bones, so I didn't worried. He went berzek, and since I hadn't nobles yet I could only pray for my ranger stop him. And he did, without losses. But well, people got sad because he died and all. So, sadness started to spread.

Then my only option was to dig. I tried to dig another way to the cave and gather the plants there. Of course that barely worked. So, just for the fun, I kept mining. And when I found the next cave I've got an announcement I never had before: Adamantite. I got excited, that could make some nice furniture who would make my dwarves happy. So, I started digging it. And then, some new announcement...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And there's where I am. The morale is that, kids:

If Kogan had died the fort would have been abandoned. But when the migrants arrived they found a barely-alive kid who gave they a motive to keep that fortress alive. And now, because of the willpower of that kid, hell has been unleashed over earth. Pretty cool, if you ask me.
