I upvote red faction guerrilla as well.
When you are bored of shooting guys you also get demolition mode which is awesome if you have some demolition oriented friend

My other suggestion goes to just cause 2 - not the most hyped or most well received, but I had lots of fun with it and still draws me for some sensless destruction now and then.

I'd suggest mercenaries 2 but that thing is ridden with bugs. Also tends to be a bit repetitive.

There is a large misconception abot the guns in Dead Island going around.
The game is NOT an FPS. the guns are absolutely crap against zombies by design. One character is good with guns and has several skills in them but if you look closely at her talent tree you will notice that bladed weapon skills take quite a bit of her skilltree as well.

Guns are only good once yu get some mods on them like addng some damage proc like electricity or fire but without them you basically have to dump an entire magazine into a zombie (headshots don't get any bonuses on zombies) just to kill 1 walker (the lowest of the low).

Obligatory STALKER. Sorta open world post-apocalypse FPS. Super gritty, super Russian.

The other Wolfenstein game before New Order was pretty decent IMO, still fairly shiny by today's standards. It's just like every other Wolfenstein game, except you get occult powers in this one. The game is based around a hub design, which is unusual for Wolfenstein games. Not legendary, but more Nazi-killin' if you're not sated after New Order.

Just-plain-Wolfenstein I'd dispute due to pacing problems that entirely ruined the game for me. The one before it, Return to Castle Wolfenstein (i.e. the first modern one, I think) was much more fun for me.

It IS paced very differently than your typical 1-off level Wolfenstein games. Like I said, it's a hub-based design, you revisit parts of the game with new powers to find stuff you couldn't get before, there are wandering squads of Nazis....it definitely has a different flow than other Wolfenstein games. I thought it was ok, but if you're in sync with the average Wolfenstein game design, yeah, it's going to feel a little weird.

That wasn't the only problem, though it did end up feeling like I was forced to replay the same level over and over in between the "real" levels. What really killed it for me is the traditional secrets system and how it interacted with the pacing of each individual level. For example, some of the findable secrets impact your medallion's power level, so you really needed to find them during the mission. Since you can't replay completed missions once you've accepted your score for that mission, it strongly encourages you to throw immersion out the window while the science lab you're in is suffering a severe containment breach and instead of panicking trying to escape you're wading through all the nazi zombie guys humping every wall looking for a switch or button that leads to a powerup collectible you need.

Granted you could always play every level twice in a row, followed by replaying the hub level with different enemies (again), but that just makes the problem worse. What was there was enjoyable if you can ignore those mechanics and can risk being underpowered in the later game.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

True, it's more of a 'first person stabber' than shooter, but FPS is probably the best descriptions of it. I used the guns quite a lot, mainly just as I enjoyed it, and it added a bit of an extra challenge. I did eventually mod it to make them more worth while, but it's still a great game regardless.

Ductape, if you get time, let us know if we're going in the right direction. It might be that you've heard about/played all of these, and if so we can move to some more...unusual...suggestions.

F.E.A.R already got mentioned but I'll go ahead and do it again. Didn't like the sequels particularly but the first game was a lot of fun.

Thanks for all these great suggestions!

I have played most of the older stuff named but a few that are sounding good are:

Bulletstorm an Mass Effect 2. I might consider F.E.A.R but I really dont like scary games, they freak me out.

Never played Bulletstorm but if the shooting is fun and the world is interesting, then I should like it. I thought Call of Juarez: Gunslinger was great, namely for those reasons.

I got bored playing Mass Effect 1 and never finshed it, so I decided to give ME2 a whirl. So far its kinda cool, kinda slow. I am sure it gets better once I get off this Cerberus station.

I also have Vampire tM: Bloodlines sitting around. I guess I havent played it because I am worried it might feel dated. I struggled through Knights of the Old Republic because it was so highly rated. ANyway, these games are far from atmospheric, theme-park shooters, but still they are fun. For example I like the Batman Arkham stuff for the theme-parkyness of them.

Thanks for the suggestions, time for more Mass Effect 2 and maybe Bulletstorm.

"F.E.A.R" is more of a FPS than a horror game, meaning you'll be spending more time fighting squads of enemy soldiers (Who're quite intelligent with group tactics and grenade usage) than you will be being stalking by long haired, little girl. That being said, the game does have frequent jump scares and it actually moves more towards horror the closer to the end you get.

On the off chance you haven't played it, I'll mention "Blood" as well. If you've played "Duke Nukem 3D", "Blood" will be quite familiar. It is an FPS with a focus on horror and macabre. I say horror but it's not a scary game, you fight through hordes of zombies and fanatic cultists using a flare gun, dynamite and other imaginative weapons. The level design is the strong point of the game, with some maps being full buildings and the surrounding grounds. The game has a lot of movie references through out it and there's a good number of hidden areas to discover.

I have chosen to expand beyond your FPS tag, as I found it unnecessarily limiting for your purpose. An older suggestion would be the excellent Mafia 2, NOT to be confused with The Godfather 2. Syndicate is worth a ride although it is not an open world design.

I liked Watch Dogs as well as Sleeping Dogs. Planet Explorers is excellent for open world with great atmosphere. Metro Last Light is excellent if you can run it. Most of the competitive shooters also have entertaining, if predictable, campaigns for single player. Despite critical reviews, fun can be had with all of the CoD games, Homefront(short), Battlefield 4, Medal of Honor(2012).

OK I will give FEAR a glance, thanks.

I played Mafia 2 and loved it, atmosphere was great. I was thinking about trying LA Noir, any B12 reviews of that? Loved Sleeping Dogs too, I just loved walking the edge of cop and gangster. We need more games like these too.

IN terms of the multiplayer War shooters, i hear block ops is kinda cool. I have never played any of the modern duty front games, which one has the best single player experience?

Yes, these suggestions need not be only FPS games. For example, I found the Batman Arkham games to be pretty fun ride too, though Arkham Origins is kinda meh.

I am thinking atmosphere is the link between all these games. Big set pieces, dramatic sequences, tense action.

Thanks again everyone!

I've played "Mafia: City of Lost Heaven", the first one. That was a fun 3rd person shooter, more for the storyline than the action. It's more slower paced, developing a stronger story rather than shooting everything up. The interesting point of it is there are road rules to obey (Speed limits, driving on the right side of the road, crossing lights) if you want to stay inconspicuous. It is a bit of a generic city though, and there's not as many notable landmarks as in, say, "GTA: San Andreas". It's more like "GTA III" in that regard, all city with more parks than country side.

There's the "Jedi Knight" series. "Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight" is a good shooter with a good story, "Jedi Knight: Outcast" has a good story but annoying sections of shooting (Snipers mostly), "Jedi Knight: Academy" has a rather eh story but the best lightsaber combat with combos, directional attacks and power moves. Get's rather flail-y, but windmilling your way through groups of stormtroopers is great fun.

FEAR isn't too scary (compared to say Condemned), but it really depends on how much you can take - one of my friends just hands down couldn't take more than 10 minutes of it. Most of the time it is more of a straight up shooter though.

Mass Effect 2 is amazing. I wasn't too thrilled (and never completed) ME1 or 3, but Mass Effect 2 is just a masterpiece of game design - it's one of the first games that plays like a proper sci-fi epic. Definitely picks up a lot as it goes on as well - it's a bit of a slog through the first few missions before you find all the awesome team mates - but as soon as you do it's amazing.

Vtm:Bloodlines is pretty dated and rough round the edges in parts (especially cut scenes. Literally the worst animation) but it's a case of being better than the sum of it's parts, and by the time it starts to go a bit iffy you'll have already had an awesome time (the first two hubs are great, the last two are less so). Also, if you're in for some crazyness, you can pick to be the Malkavian class, who are quite literally insane. All your dialogue options will be crazy, and you'll get some very, very interesting reactions. Playing as the hideously deformed nosferatu are fun too, as npcs will freak the hell out when they see you and call the police on you. Seriously recommend, but make sure you get the WESP patches which are STILL BEING DONE TEN YEARS AFTER THE RELEASE. Latest one on RPS: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/04/25/vampire-the-masquerade-bloodlines-patch-bugs-glitches/

There is a 'patch only' mode of wesp's patches, which is great for if you only want patches and not re-balances/changes, although I have to say Wesp's vision seems to be right with it.

I play it in bursts of 15-30 minutes every several days. The shooting is fun and empowering, but I weep like a girl when scary stuff happens.

The thing with FEAR is... after a while you get the point that the psychotic break sequences almost never actually hurt you. The ones that do make sense in context and don't come in for a long time. Once you get a bit into the game and understand what's going on, it's less frightening/unsettling and more of a fascinating study in [Spoiler expunged].

I might be an odd case. Alma is by far one of the most sympathetic antagonists I can remember pondering in vidya gaems.
