FB not getting paralyzed?
« on: July 28, 2014, 02:38:13 pm »

I'm getting attacked by a skinless stegasaurid, and I have modded-in war giant cave spiders. It's surrounded by three of the bastards and it's taken at least five bite wounds with accompanying venom injections, but all that's showing up is limb damage. What gives? (It was eventually bitten to death.)

Most organic poisons have [AFFECTS_CREATURE_CLASS:GENERAL_POISON] or something to that nature. This means the poison only does anything to creatures who are biologically vulnerable to poisons. FBs are not. (As far as I know, however, while they're also immune to their own poison, they're NOT immune to OTHER FB poisons.)

I think that some creatures also take longer to poison then others, I assume it might have something to do with size.

Yeah, the wiki specifically mentions that poisonous bites or stings from some animals, while fatal to dwarves, can be shrugged off by bigger organic beasties like hydras. I believe it was size that was the factor.

So, all FBs are descendants of Hiranyakashipu?

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Giant cave spider venom, as an example, is based on size.  The larger the critter we're talking about, the less effect it will actually have.

FBs are in fact vulnerable to the GEN_POISON creature class, but they're huge.  Like, REALLY huge.  MASSIVE.  You would need a LOT of GCS venom to even slow them down.  Even five GCSs wouldnt be able to inject enough quickly enough to matter.

Meantime, little things like dwarves, goblins, kobolds, etc. aren't big enough to just "shrug it off."  They suffocate in minutes from the lung paralysis.

For the record, try looking at a forgotten beast corpse some time. You'll see that it should weigh about 12,000-15,000 Urists. Humans in this game weigh about 80 Urists so we can safely say that Forgotten Beasts weigh 15 tonnes.

Also, GCS venom has a ridiculously short period of activity, 5 time units before it takes effect, then 15 time units overall. There are 2400 time units in a day.

The only vanilla creature with venom not diluted by the size of the enemy is the giant desert scorpion.

Hint. Hint.

It is also worth noting that multiple injections of the same venom doesn't stack.  Five GCS bites are effectively the same as one.

Unless something was changed, syndromes of the exact same type do stack to some degree, but only as long as the active effect times overlap and only if the effect is something that can be defined in finite amounts.

Don't fight it on grass, lead it into your fortress! Then again, maybe the surrounding !!peasants!! would light up your soldiers if you did that.

Be careful, they may block it most of the time but there is still a chance they will miss and  get vaporized plus as you already noticed the surroundings can go up in flames and kill them that way as well.
