Socializing in a burrow

I've got a remote magma work area, like I think many people do. I've got my workers with their luxury bedroom, drink, food, and a dining room (not set to meeting hall)

all restricted by a burrow. Everything is working fine, except they don't socialize. I could make the dining room a meeting hall, but then dwarves from all over the fort would go there and I don't want them just all wandering down there, eating the food and drinking the alcohol unless they have a carry task.

Is there anyway to restrict a meeting hall to dwarves actually in a burrow? My other dining hall is in a burrow (for invaders) but everyone just goes there.

Are you sure they're not socializing?  I used to do that all of the time in .31.25 and .34.11 and they'd socialize just fine.

I don't think there's a way to do what you're asking though.

I'd always check to see if they had "talked with a friend / spouse / lover" type thoughts, but checking social skills is another way.  Based on my observations I'm pretty sure if two dwarves stand next to each other in a burrow they'll socialize.  I'm not yet sure if they actively seek to do that or if it only happens if they randomly path next to each other and stop.

The problem is, they're not.

When they aren't working or eating, they're standing in their room. rather than standing in the dining hall.
So they don't stand around each other and talk. They all isolate in their individual rooms.
I currently have 3 of the 5 with no job right now, and each one is in their room rather than the dining room.

Oh, okay.  In my case I was just using small 3x3 burrows to sort of force dwarves to socialize, but this is a different case.  The only real solutions in this case are to designate meeting areas or other burrows inside of that burrow, but both have unintended side effects that you can't get around without locking doors or something.

Dwarves with a bedroom prefer to stay there when idle.  If you want them to use the dining hall, it has to be set as a meeting zone.  Which will invoke parties.

parties isn't so much the issue as it is pulling the dwarves down from the upper levels.

Idle dwarfs hang around either in a room they own or in a _meeting_ area/room they can access. A dining room which isn't set as a meeting area is just a cantina, and nobody will go there except in order to eat.

For socialising without dedicated meeting areas, you'll need to fully restrict the dwarfs to a very small area; e.g. make a burrow containing just the forges and connected (quantum) input piles, a few beds (not defined as bedrooms) and a small dining room, all in the same ~6x6 to 10x10 room. Dwarfs have nowhere else to go and spend time, so thay'll stay in the area constantly, and forced physical closeness will enable some socialising.

Socialising without meeting halls isn't easy.

Distance matters. Dwarves hanging out in a large meeting area will barely socialize. I do think dwarves need to be right next to each other to engage in development of social skills.
I tend to make a 3x3 meeting area for all my dwarves, where they can dogpile in their free time. Most my dwarves are legendary erverything on the social skill department and friends with nearly everyone, barring grudges.

Note that this can be a Bad Thing. If you anticipate a fort that's gonna lose dwarves, you should be very happy if they don't socialize.

Both upstairs and downstairs have a room designated as meeting hall. The magma workers are restricted to downstairs, most of the rest are restricted to upstairs and only a few designated carriers are allowed to go everywhere. The carriers might throw parties downstairs and slow work down but if there are only a few of them and they are kept busy with carrying stuff it should get too bad.

Yeah, I don't want to do fort wide burrows, that just gets annoying having to manage things if you need haulers in another area, mining, etc. It would be nice if we had an option to create a "burrow meeting hall" vs a general open one.
