I got a necromancer outside.
« on: July 27, 2014, 10:58:39 pm »

I just started a new fort using version 0.40.04 and I just got my 1st necromancer outside my fort. I'm not sure what to do about him. last I saw he and his zombies were just standing around where they spawned and at some point along the line they killed a werebeast that appeared out of nowhere. It took me a long time to get the way into my fort sealed with a draw bridge.

Will the necromancer go away or do I need to find a way to kill him?

the only fighting dwarfs I got are the two guys I started with that both have a level 2 sword fighting skill and level 5 dodging skill and no real armor to speak of.

I believe necromancers do leave after milling around a while, but if other "siege" type events are to go by, it might take a good bit.

Also, don't try to engage the zombies with that meagre a military, especially if they have equipment.

Thinking...
Get them all into cages,
Wall the zombies behind a fortification in your barracks for training marksmen..
Set the  necromancer up nearby to revive the zombies each time they die...   :P

I've never done this, but I've not yet had the pleasure of facing a necromancer.  I've only read this as the sorts of stuff necromancers are good for.

I was thinking about something along those lines myself. I just need to think of a way to get them into some cage traps..... Once I build a few cage traps. All I got to keep things out is a drawbridge.

As far as fighting goes I didn't think I had the force I would have needed to kill them all off. lucky for me I have everything I need inside the fort and don't need to go outside for anything right now. I was even able to dig myself a well from below as the zombies were outside.

Caging them, I can help with...

Setup an airlock. using your drawbridge as the outer gate.
Put cage traps in the airlock.
Invite them in.  If they miss traps, close that inner door.

From experience, watch out for bowmen.

I think the hardest part about trapping them will be getting them to come to my gate at all. They had a lot of time when they 1st came onto the map when I had the bridge built but didn't have a lever for it yet or even the parts I needed to make the lever. I need to think of a way to bait them. Also the path going to my fort's main gate is a very long underground 3 tile wide tunnel.

This is my front.

Enemies that wait for invitations?  I've not had to deal with that before.  Normally they just charge my front gate so long as its open, and nothing distracts them.  Perhaps someone who's worked with undead can give some tips, I'd been kind of expecting a suicidal rush of dead stuff.

Tunnel out underneath them, build the traps and things you need to get set up, and then break the surface nearby? I advise chained-up animals as a series of bait creatures.

I haven't dealt with zombies since 0.40, but in 0.34 this was pretty common. While undead that come as part of a siege will suicide rush, undead raised on the premises will mill around wherever they were raised.

In this situation, I would recommend a bait squad to lead the zombies to your traps. Put a dwarf you don't mind losing in a squad by himself, and station him where he'll get zombaggro. Then when he gets zombaggro, turn off the order and watch him hightail it back to the fort.

Alternatively, wait for the next caravan and let the guards take care of it.

in this case the zombies can't have been raised on the spot because the zombies are a mix of elfs and humans and at this point in the game I haven't had any elfs or humans die on the edge of my map yet. My only caravan so far was a dwarf caravan.

This is just over one year into the game. also I should be getting close to the lava sea by now. I already broke into the 1st 3 caves.

There will be plenty more zombies. At least if it goes like my siege with a necromancer went. He just keept on summoning more people: humans, elves and even goblins. When he came, there were only about ten zombies, but the numbers slowly grew to the thirties. I can't tell much more though because my game crashed at the turn of a new season. And the siege might have been some sort of a cause, as the necromancer was prancing at the edge of the map where migrants normally arrive.

What kind of weapon should I train my dwarfs in for when I do have a force for fighting them? When I started I was planing on going for candy swords.

Hammers and maces to pulp the body.

Blunt weapons also have a decent chance to pierce armour and most importantly, have a less chance than swords to create more limbs for animation.

Be really careful when doing mêlée with necromancer zombies - the equipment they carry makes them that much more frightening.
