Winning is dwarf fortress is possible... but in order to win you have to either lose so spectacularly that people seeing your loss are awestruck.

As an example, having your entire site population be on fire at the same time definitely counts as a win.

Or you can make megaprojects. The more grandiose, magma-filled and overly complex, the better.

This is a perfect summation of win.

Good point. I am sorry great masters of DF, I realize now that I have treated DF like a game when it is actually real life.
Play Unreal World RPG, it's the most ironically named game in all existence. It's basically a non-fantasy DF adventure mode, that has dev's who can't tell the difference between a video game, and real life.

But what if you're an Atheist?
The objective Universe cares not what you believe.  If there is a heaven, it exists for atheists as well.  On the flipside, if there is no heaven then it doesn't exist for believers either.

Consider "Pascal's Wager."

And when you gaze upon Vishnu's visage, you simply say "shit, there were more than two options"

By the way, DF wiki has a mention of winning the game. In the article on magma.  ;D

BURN THE HERETIC! MAY HIS SOUL BE CLENSED OF ALL EVIL BY FIRE

My second turn's unnoficial goal was to turn everyone into vampires, and it backfired so bad, I ended up making the fort a more efficient, safer and friendlier place.
Apparently they evolved a taste for everything I love and care about
