Personally, I think winning is...Enslaving the false-gods of the realm with books, then going down to the HFS, take the sword, and conquer hell.

Then.

Then you have won.

Problem is they removed the ability to "take the sword" in this version of DF I'm sorry. Maybe Toady will add it back?

You can fake being able to run on water. You can't fake looking cool when you break your foot on a door and hit your head on the floor.

It was removed accidentally, actually.

You could take the slab

Let's turn this thread into implementing actual heresy, instead of all this silly nonsense about "winning".

Forgive this heresy folks, I know losing olis fun and all, but what about a way to actually WIN the game?
No.  Winning is relative, and losing is inevitable.  Turns out thats how life works too.

I still find i fascinating that the HFS has features that somewhat abstract and break the standard laws of the game. It gives that "not of this world and not meant to be" feel to it.

I'd like it if HFS could be randomized.

An exact copy of the fortress, down to the trees up top, but FILLED WITH DEMONS.
A fortress of fire and brimstone, with corrupted, super-dwarves inside.

Maybe have Armok himself appear, with a 1% chance? I dunno. 'Twould be cool.

Make as much as you can. For as long as you can. Whoever has the most when he dies, WINS. DF in a nutshell.

It might be nice to have some optional goalposts in Fortress mode, beyond establishing more nobility and/or luring the monarch. Not necessarily a game-ending feature but more like a mission the Mountainhome sends you off with and updates when you've finished. The missions could each have a single candy wafer as a reward to encourage participation, with the scale of the mission/reward scaling up with the level of nobility present.

EX:
Tradegood fad, produce and export 20 barrels of strawberry wine[5] or better.
War declared, produce and offer 60 +bronze spears+ or better.
Over-population crisis, produce and offer 500 wheels of cheese[5] or better.
King demands the construction of a massive monument on top of tomb, produce and offer 400 obsidian blocks, 80 electrum bars, 30 +cut diamonds+ or better.
Queen wishes to wear different outfit every day, produce and offer 300 +dyed cloth+ of at least five colors, 10 +cut gems+ of at least 5 types or better.

But what if you're an Atheist?
The objective Universe cares not what you believe.  If there is a heaven, it exists for atheists as well.  On the flipside, if there is no heaven then it doesn't exist for believers either.

The thing you have to know about Dwarf Fortress. Is that the only losing move is not to play.

Winning is dwarf fortress is possible... but in order to win you have to either lose so spectacularly that people seeing your loss are awestruck.

As an example, having your entire site population be on fire at the same time definitely counts as a win.

Or you can make megaprojects. The more grandiose, magma-filled and overly complex, the better.
