Animal max populations
« on: July 26, 2014, 05:51:51 am »

Are these hardcoded, or can I change those?
For example, I am really starting to lean towards not bringing  any dogs anymore on start, because dogs' max population is much too high IMO.
I like my war dogs, but I like my FPS better.

If I can't change max populations I'm going to stick to slow breeding grazers and fowl from now on.

Edit: oops, sorry, wanted to post this in Help.

Though I could've sworn I'd modded this before, a quick search has disabused me of that notion.

The per-species cap is 50, but it can be exceeded by migrations or already pregnant animals giving birth after the cap has been reached. There are a few population control measures you can take; keeping most females of a species caged, slaughtering surplus population, changing animals' litter/clutch sizes in the raws, or even increasing the time it takes for them to grow to adulthood. It may take some tweaking, but if you combine these methods creatively you'll be able to find a good balance of utility and FPS-friendliness for your favored species.

I suppose that means it's hardcoded indeed?

While I do know of these methods, been playing since before z-levels. I was just wondering if it was (still) hardcoded / looking for a solution that will still allow me to breed enormous, supermuscular, gigantic framed dogs without having to deal with continuous hordes of puppies being pooped out that need butchering / atomsmashing, draining my time I want to spend on more creative things ingame.
For some reason caging the females has always felt wrong to me, and makes me end up with cages filled with dogs that died of old age. So sad :( . But I guess if it's hardcoded, the cage most females method would be the least time-consuming, so I might need to just do that.
