burial, cremation, and ghosts
« on: July 26, 2014, 05:04:23 am »

If I craft some dead dwarves in fortress mode, bury them in wooden caskets, next to a reservoir with magma that can be used to flood and incinerate the caskets with magma, at the pull of a lever..

1) Will ghosts rise if I burn caskets after burial?

2) Will and adventurer be able to raise ghosts by pulling the magma lever, when he visits the site?

3) same two questions, replace caskets with non magma-safe stone slabs

A coffin that is destroyed by fire or magma, is considered to be deconstructed.

So any dead inside would be considered unburied, I believe, and thus should incur ghosts.

Although, no ghosts would rise in Adventure mode - to my knowledge ghosts don't exist in adventure mode, or are only available through player hijinks.

It would also make the ghost incredibly pissed off and likely to kill your dwarves.

I think I recall someone's adventurer being killed by ghosts in a previous version. I could very well be not remembering correctly however.

It definitely happened in Deathgate when somebody tried visiting it as an Adventurer (in an alternate timeline).

It would also make the ghost incredibly pissed off and likely to kill your dwarves.
This - any dwarf whose coffin or memorial is destroyed is guaranteed to come back as a Murderous Ghost.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
