caravan just turns around?
« on: July 26, 2014, 03:43:37 am »

My depot is accessible. and usually even if the wagons can't get there the guys with animals come in. My dwarven caravan finally shows up. Liaison comes in, has his conversation, my guys haul stuff to the depot. I ordered up a bunch of stuff to make steel and iron since i have none, and the wagons are there. I'm waiting for them, wondering what's taking so long and go check them out to see them heading for the edge of the map. No messages nothing. They just walked in a little ways, then turned around a left. WTF???

Animal guys also left. Never made it to the depot. No combat, nada.

There's probably a dead wagon or pack animal somewhere that fell from a tree

There would be combat logs from that. There are no dead animals. They just walked in a short distance then turned around.

My money's on the traders being terrified of harmless wildlife and/or horrified by a refuse pile, immediately scuttling their wagon and fleeing the map. Check if you have a missing "Wagon" in the deceased unit list.

(As a separate note, creature deaths (like the scuttling of a wagon) are not being reported in the combat logs.)

If they were injured it would be. When some wood fell on my ram that was in the combat log.

But I checked the path, there wasn't anything dead there.

Refuse piles were far away from them, they really only entered the map for like 10-15 tiles then bailed.

The game crashed to desktop shortly after. When i brought it back up the same caravan entered from another area and made it fine. It passed through most of the same area the first run made, but slightly different.

When a caravan turns around, that's _always_ because a caravan member came to harm. You should have looked at the "dead units" register, there was probably a wagon in there. Wagons don't produce combat logs.

I _think_ a common cause in .40.x is that wagon-pulling animals get spooked (saw a corpse, refuse pile or butcher's workshop) and bolt, breaking the wagon in the process. Scared animals don't produce combat logs, either.

I think my problem with caravan destroying wagon may be of similar nature, but I don't understand why it was OK for all three previous caravans (and first wagon of the current caravan) to go near butcher's shop, refuse pile and some corpses. Maybe some animals are only allergic to some corpses?

If that happened, my dwarves would have been running outside hauling things in to stockpiles. No one did that. Unfortunately it crashed, but I gave their path a once over and didn't see anything dead or broken.
