[IC Thread] Kurchil's Children - Day 1 - Introduction
« on: July 25, 2014, 10:19:21 pm »

This is the IC thread for the Kurchil’s Reboot. If you were going to use double parenthesis put it in the OOC thread.

Day 1 – Dawn

Aetharbor

Like flies on rancid meat, the port was teeming with merchants and thieves. If she looked closely enough Asithi could tell them apart. But if she let the scene drift out of focus it became clear they were all just greedy people flocking to the money. Asithi took a moment to enjoy watching these people filling different roles to the same end. That’s all any of it was, playing a role. When she narrowed her attention to the individuals they made for more interesting specimens. A merchant’s wife generously offering wine to a ship’s captain; as if she wanted his company, not is business. A beggar’s limp worsened as people glanced his way. A child made cute eyes at a wealthy woman while their sibling cut her purse.

Perhaps the guard that grabbed them was interested in defending the law, or perhaps he thought the woman would reward him. Asithi wondered briefly at what it was that made some people choose to be just. It was a choice, after all, just like any other. Did the guard weigh his options carefully? Did he assign value to justice? Or did he know that he needed a niche to fill, and guard was as good as any other? Was there an attraction to Justice? She a strange lady who had never caught Asithi’s fancy. Asithi could describe her. Armored in the brightest metals, shimmering in the dawn, she strode looking for those that broke promises to each other and to society. She was swift in her punishment, but never extreme. Her eyes carefully searched the crowd, discerning intent in faces, watching for dishonesty. Yet for all that Asithi’s description of Justice could never by itself motivate her to action. Only that strange creature dancing in the distance named Curiosity had done that. Now it leapt side to side, as the interesting little mouse had, as it danced across the waters to the south, towards  Arclow.

Seawall

The sun rising over Seawall found Will Bayler pulling himself onto the planks of the dock. A few people noticed him and came over, but when they saw he seemed able enough they moved on. It was a small comfort to think they might have helped if he had needed it, but he should have thought someone could stop to help him up quicly. When he pulled himself all of the way up, however, he realized the rising sun wasn’t all that illuminated him. The dock was on fire, only a couple feet away from him. He briefly considered jumping back into the water, but he was too entranced to move. It was an odd sight to see flames dancing on water. The mesmerizing scintillations that normally drew a person’s gaze into the flames were only amplified by the way the light bounced around in the water. He found his thumb gently rubbing against his piece of leather as he stood entranced by the flames.

Meyath Deefan was similarly greeted by flames in the early morning. Her ship was kept at bay from its port by the flames dancing along the wood. All the passengers were staring at the blaze while the captain and his men argued briefly about what to do. They decided the risk for pirates still being around was too great, and so the passengers and most important supplies were loaded into two small dinghies to be sent ashore while the ship and most of its crew fled to a safer port, to return to collect the dinghies and the landing crew later. Meyath clutched her small piece of wood as they were rowed ashore. When she was finally able to walk out onto the beach she turned to view the flames again and saw a man on the near side of the burning dock, outlined by the flames hungrily consuming the end of the wooden structure.

Iseaya

Varkhal Damhöln held in his hand something of importance. The weight of the feeling bore down on him. This small twisted piece of metal held at least as much history as his familial trinket. He marveled at the fact that he had run in to so much history so early in his adventures. Surely this was confirmation that he had chosen well, travelling the world. The small piece of metal in his hands seemed to appreciate the sunrise. The oranges and reds of the dawn played beautifully off of the bronze metal and bright red adornment. He gave it one final, lingering look before passing it back to its rightful owner.

Sofia Sala took in the port city while Varkhal was absorbed in her shield piece. She saw it slowly waking up, people beginning to move about its streets. She could feel its breath on the nape of her neck, the air brimming with wonderful scents. Fresh baked bread called from one street, only to be overwhelmed moments later by the smell of spices being cooked into meat wafting from another. She could hear the whisper of people greeting each other in the morning grow slowly louder. This place had life in it, and was sure to provide her with an adventure. She was roused from her contemplation of the chances this port held by the man who had become interested in her artefact returning it. When she looked back out the city a different realization came to mind; the moon would only be visible a short while longer. She quickly searched about for it, and found its full shape still floating proudly in the sky, another promise for adventure.

Spirarbor

Cara Penrose enjoyed the sunrise. Living in Spirarbor you either had to love it or hate it. Some had tight shutters and blinds to avoid what they called a gaudy and unnecessary lightshow. Others came outside and looked across the sea. As the sun peeked over the horizon the lighthouse exploded in color. The sky was illuminated in impossible colors. Cara had heard it theorized that there were colors in that explosion which could not otherwise be seen. It was impossible to describe the sight, and even after seeing it a multitude of times Cara sometimes felt she must have imagined it. She couldn’t even describe it to herself. Sometimes it felt like she tasted the colors, other times she could smell them. Most often she could hear them, and the colormusic played by the lighthouse was beautiful. The surreal moment passed, however, as it did every morning. The world seemed gray and tuneless for a moment before it reverted to its normal state. Savoring the fleeting memory of impossible sensations, Cara turned to look to the north, picturing Aetharbor lying past the forests, and the mountains further beyond. For a brief moment she was able to mix memory and imagination, and she watched the mountains light up under harmonious colors beyond sight. Then that memory too was gone, and she couldn't grasp even the faintest recollection of those surreal experiences, leaving her with images of majestic mountains colored with hope.

Regarding the child, Asithi was suddenly reminded of her need for a weapon. It would be a wise investment, would lessen the amount of money she was carrying around, and would be helpful if she encountered children similar to these ones.

She found children a little overrated. They were hardly ever charming, their skills were a dim echo of adult skills, and they could talk about few things interestingly, and frequently needed elementary and sensible things explained. They had only empty promises of future excellence to them. These particular children, for instance, would possibly become famous rapists or murderers in their future. And while this was all fine and good, right now they were of no use and of little interest. Hopefully a little jail time or forceful amputation would mature them further.

First order of business - check prices for local blackjacks, clubs, maces, morningstars, daggers. Then, if they are not unreasonable, purchase three weapons, a blackjack, a mace, a dagger. Mace should be placed prominently on self, blackjack less so, the dagger worn discreetly.

Asithi wanders into the marketplace and looks around for weapons-dealers. She found three of them, each selling a variety of different weapons, though she was only interested in five types.

The first sold morning stars and maces. He seemed to react favorably to the attractive serpen, giving her attention over other wealthier looking customers. He offered a low quality quality mace that was little more than a block of metal with a shaft for 40 coins or a simple ball on a chain morningstar for 50. He had only one higher quality weapon which Asithi could afford, a flanged mace of good quality for 90 coins. Asithi admired the beauty of his more expensive weapons, which incorporated all manner of art into their design, before moving on to ask the next vendor some questions.

This one sold swords and daggers. He gave Asithi a look of appreciation as she walked up to his stall, but gave her little more attention than any other customer. He offered a dagger of reasonable quality for 30 coins, and most of the rest of his stock was more ornamental that Asithi thought was necessary with her small purse.

Finally came a woman tending a stall with an assortment of clubs hanging from a wooden rack. She gave the serpen an attitude of indifference as she gave quotes on her wares. A simple wooden cudgel would go for 15 coppers, a spiked one for 60 coppers. She also had a braided leather blackjack for 30.

Weapons are a fascinating thing. Asithi has never killed a person before, but has always wanted to find out what doing so feels like.

Purchase braided leather blackjack and dagger, then seek employment in debt collection.

Varkhal inspired calm but deeply, taking in the many smells offered to him by the port city's rich morning air. They were probably far enough from the port itself since he didn't notice the overpowering smell of fish guts most of these places have a deserved fame of having. Dressed in simple but well-made commoner's clothes, and only recently getting better from his problems with dark circles under his eyes coupled with pale skin, the young man was most definitely not a striking sight to behold but still friendly-looking nonetheless. Any books he had once possessed or had borrowed were left home, every piece of knowledge he could glean from their pages long ingrained in his memory. Now a fresh adventurer, he hoped to learn far more than he ever could in the life he had left behind.

His gaze turned to Sofia Sala, the Aethen he had conveniently - after some searching - found in the way to the port city of Iseaya. Energetic and confident, the girl seemed friendly and likable enough so far. He had no doubt her personality had the potential to create problems in the future, but that was fine. Though he wouldn't say it aloud, he had no intention of leaving her company until he had studied enough to find out whether that artifact of hers held any special qualities and how powerful an impression the original owner of the shield had left in the world. For now, however... "And here we are. Tell me, where would you like to go first?" he asked in his well-mannered smile that didn't do much to alleviate the impression he had a bad case of sleep deprival going on.

Sofia gazed at the sights and sounds of the morning city and up at the full moon lingering in the sky, full of portent of Sofia's sure-to-come glory! Ah, her adventure was coming to an amazing start! Destiny had plotted a path for her that she'd have to be a fool not to take, and so it'd led here, the port-city of Iseaya. Yet she wasn't alone! She'd managed to pick up a companion on her way to the city (a scholar from what she could figure out, he seemed quite curious in her shield bit) and now he was asking her where they wanted to head to first.

Sofia had a few plans for that! Idly fluttering her wings, Sofia took a couple of moments to come to a decision. "Ah, I know just where we should go! Let's head down to the weapon shop. After all, whoever heard of heroes who can't fight?" Sofia knew that she wanted to get on with her journeys as fast as she could, but being an Aethen if she didn't have a weapon she was going to get crushed! So heading out and getting some arms was the obvious step.

Head down to the weapon shop, dragging Varkhal along.

Varkhal already had the slight suspicion that would be Sofia's answer to his question. The flutter of her wings caught his attention, not for the first nor certainly for the last time; due to not having met many Aethen in his lifetime, he was still moderately impressed by their colorful butterfly wings and flight ability. "I think it is good to have a partner when trying to buy something. Merchants treat each customer differently, after all." he remarked as he was hurried along by his shorter companion. And their chances of getting a better deal would certainly improve if he could use his spells to their advantage.

Varkhal is dragged by Sofia to check the wares of the weapon (and armor, in case they're nearby) stores.

Head down to the weapon shop, dragging Varkhal along.
Varkhal is dragged by Sofia to check the wares of the weapon (and armor, in case they're nearby) stores.

The Dragon’s Armory was a simple find, its sign hanging from a halberd poking into the street. Sofia marched boldly into the store with Varkhal following closely behind. They were greeted by a shopkeeper that appeared to regard the aethen as being rather cute, not paying much attention to the less cute human trailing in behind. The shopkeeper was a rather large and motherly looking woman wearing a blacksmith’s apron which was covered in splotches of coal, evidence she did more than sell weapons.

There were several tables, each devoted to weapons of different natures. The one nearest the door had metal hand-crossbows and the next had a small selection of throwing daggers. The others were devoted to melee weapons, one of swords, one of daggers, and one of axes. Along the wall were two racks, one of halberds and one of spears.

Varkhal noticed a shop across the street that seemed to sell armor, and briefly stopped by to inquire after the stock. The shopkeeper was charmed by his refined mannerisms and clear speech. He briefly showed Varkhal his stock, which mostly consisted of metal armors costing several silvers at minimum. He did have a few leather jerkins available for only 40 coppers, and they seemed to be of decent craftsmanship. Both shopkeepers seemed willing to talk to the pair about their wares; it being early in the morning meant there was little competition for their attention.

Swords used a fair amount of metal in their composition aside from possible decorations and therefore had a tendency to be more expensive albeit flexible. Spears were fairly cheap due to their wooden haft and metal tip, but were useless as soon as an enemy closed in. The weapon store's shopkeeper seemed to have taken a liking for his companion so the young man approached the Aethen and whispered her a message. "Sofia, please check the prices of spears, short swords and shields for me. I will try my luck at the armor shop."

With his message delivered, Varkhal then remade his way across the street and returned to the sympathetic man. "Mister, do you have any manner of light cloth-based armor? A selection of basic infantry helmets would also be pleasant."

Check the armor shop for any sign of gambeson or brigandine armor and if there are cheap kettle helmets or skullcaps for sale.

The man looked surprised briefly. "Yeah, I've got a small selection of gambesons. Don't tend to put them out front, as they tend to be sold to go along with other armors, you understand. I could part with a quilted cloth one for 15 coin, but don't expect it to protect you much. The quilted leather versions will cost you 50; they take a bit more work to make than these leather jerkins out front you see. We don't sell brigandine's here, not really part of the local style, understand? My kettle helmets, those usually go for 20 coin. They might be simple, but there is some metal involved you see."

It was dawn. Cara had been watching the skies as the fleeting memories of intangible strings tugged at her; as the feelings of a guitar to the strummer's hands, long after the imagery was gone, the emotional and memorial impact lasted. Cara was watching the clouds in particular as she lied down on the grassy meadows: how the colors of the rising sun shifted and changed their hues and values, astounded despite knowing that it was only water vapor in the sky -- astounded on how beautiful this world could be in all its simplicity.

Sy..synesia? Anesthesia?

She wondered for a moment back to what her parents taught her. There was a word for what she felt that described it all in its holistic worth. As a child until now, she had found joy in learning languages, and the many words and inner meanings therein: she wondered a lot at these times, ranging from how the physical and other occurrences work and interact with each other, as well as how their people and how society interacts with the environment. Given her parents' background as philosophers and also as true-hearted parents, she only found one true idea regarding her linguistics -- she had found no word describing how thankful she was to her parents.

Her eyes drifted towards the mountains in the distance; the mountains told their own story, of a land so far from Spirarbor, yet still in reach of the eyes and ears. Whether in sight or in awareness, Cara found the world to be far a bigger place than she knew it to be, and all the labels and tags people described it to fall short in talking about the parts in a whole in that regard.

A drop of water hit her forehead, and she looked around for any sign of coming rain or drizzle. Knowing the weather, it was too early for even any kind of happening, but whatever it was was enough to get her back to 'reality'.

She decided to return to her parents on this calm morn. She wanted to ask them about travel and if it was possible for her to venture into the open world, if not the local cities, at least.

Hmm. It didn't look like there were any true bows-- a shame. But there were many more varieties of weapons! Hand crossbows would manage to serve that purpose, as would throwing daggers. And even if those wouldn't do, surely she could be a melee fighter as well! Many a hero had charged into the fray with a weapon like a sword or an axe, wading through their enemies! Ah, there were a lot of options, thought Sofia as she assumed a rather dreamy look, perusing the selection.

But she had some specific things to ask! Nodding to herself, she turned to face the shopkeeper. "Right, well, I have a few questions! Do you have any larger crossbows or bows, or maybe shields? What would they cost. And on the topic of prices, what do the hand crossbows, throwing daggers, swords, axes, and spears cost?"
