Does .40 seem easier to anyone?

I've had a number of forts now, and aside from unexpected bug-issues (tree-related murder, climb/fall, etc.) .40 seems a lot less eventful than .34 was.  All of my forts have had:

- less FBs emerge
- almost no goblin attacks
- fewer megabeasts/mini-megabeasts (cyclops, minotaurs, etc.)/wereanimal attacks

Compared to .34.11.

I am generally running medium to large worlds with very short history.  What's everyone else's experience?

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

It seems that necromancers are way more common, and undead are apparently about as difficult as ever based on what I've heard.  So, there's that.  Still, combat as a whole appears to be less deadly if for no reason other than the fact that everything runs away at the first swing.

I still haven't played the new version that much, so I'm hoping to find out some for myself soon.

Some of those settings can be set in the advanced worldgen. Also, if you let the world generate for a long time (so use a small world), you can end up with a massive amount of goblins that attack a lot. Undead are also seem to be much more deadly than before, so embarking near a tower can also lead to FUN.

I'm trying my second fort (fourth, if you count the aborted reclaims) in .40 now.  So far, this game has been purely smooth sailing for me (not counting reclaim !!fun!!).  I'm barely past that aquifer, so it's barely had time to see any action, but I've made sure this fort is near several goblin outposts, with increased savagery.  I'm hopeful there will be a bit more action.

Well, with world history keeping up with you, it means everyone gets targeted, not just you. So those armies that probably would have attacked you in the old game are probably bypassing your three year old hole in the ground for a more strategically placed, or richer fortress.

Well, I was wondering... I have a tendency to put my forts in godsforsaken corners, so it may just be that I'm getting passed by, but I have only seen one goblin bandit attack and I'm on year 6, got a duke and over 2 mill in assets with a suite ready for the king.  I've seen one minotaur, one force of 8 goblins, and 2 FBs.  And that's it.

This is pretty typical for all my .40 forts; in .34 I would be fighting 50-80 goblins at a pop by now.  Others have fallen to trees, a troll (needed water, only had the starter 7 at that point), more trees (treesplosions and tantrum spirals)... When I look for a site, I am making sure the game thinks I am neighbors with all the races.  Just surprised with all 3 caverns in play I have only seen 2 FBs, and practically no greenies.

Oh well, I will keep going  :)

Everything is still in a half completed or buggy state. I'm sure stuff like sieges and megabeast attacks will be tweaked back to some semblance of functionality soon enough.

Well, the problem with FBs is that they attack each other, and fight the animal folks.  So you'll wind up with FB corpses instead of the creatures themselves. Fact is, while this won't necessarily be the final form of the FBs, animals attacking and eating each other is eventually going to happen. Probably the next time a release focuses on tracking animal populations.

I've been playing Fortress Defense II mod, which also gives a lot of sieges, but the sieges do seem less frequent and weaker than in .34.11 - there is also the fact that they run away in panic now, but I mean the sieges are weaker as in lower numbers turn up and fewer sieges per season.

Remember, stuff gets ambushed on the way. You'll notice there's significant numbers of caravans coming through without liaisons. It's possible those sieges are getting dinged up on the way in. It's also likely that the truly big sieges are getting sent to older forts that have done more.

There's also the fact that those goblin fortresses are now finite, rather than their power being based on certain individuals still surviving. Sooo . . . they might be less inclined to send out massive armies, some of which would have constituted a full tenth of their own population.

Yeah, you almost have to make sure your embark will have some fun now. I've embarked in a location at war with elves, and by a tower and several goblin pits. My last fort saw one invasion and then nothing. My miner finally drowned after a few years, and he had the only coffin the whole time. The one invasion ran away when my hammerdwarves showed up on the ramparts.

Unless you set up camp in an evil biome or next to a couple of necromancer towers with the new and improved undead to kick your dwarves heads in then I would have to agree that fortress mode is much easier now aside for new bug born challenges.

I haven't played enough forts to be certain but my last fort in DF 2012 was getting massive goblin sieges 2 to 4 times a year. In the new version I have been attacked by about 5 to 10% as many goblins including mixed bandit groups. The main reason I haven't noticed it that much is I have been embarking near necro towers and on evil biomes and the undead have kept me quite busy.

It's definitely easier.  Sieges don't auto path, neither do undead, to their nearest pathable target. (as building destroyers, opposed to all life, etc)  They appear to use visual perception only to determine if they should attack something, which is ... well, problematic for a few reasons.

Unless something significant changes with this perception/pathing combination, 40.x will always be a cakewalk compared to 34.11.  And squad leaders are still bugged to hell, so when the squad leader dies, the squad just stands around like an abandoned cadet review until the season changes and they all leave.  That bug has been there for so long, it's painful, and yet... it remains unfixed. :(

I just ran into a minotaur den as a vampire, and hacked all five to pieces without any of them landing a blow on me that did damage. Yes, it seems much easier
