Heliotrope is the color of evil !!SCIENCE!!
« on: July 24, 2014, 11:53:52 pm »

Gonna keep this short.

So, every single dwarf in my entire civilization has Heliotrope eyes. Any idea why that might be?

Evidence of genetics in Dwarf Fortress, a crazy coincidence, (as always) dupe raws bug, or maybe something else entirely.

From why I can tell, that is normal. Civilizations have the same hair/eye colours.

I've never had them all literally have the exact same eye color. I've had them have generally the same, like all having various shades of brown hair for instance. This is a first for me.

I also never (in pre-0.40 versions) had them literally the same eye and skin colour, they had differences, some were darker, some were lighter. But now indeed, all my 46 dwarves, including newborns, have copper eyes and raw umber skin. I guess the population has been isolated for a long time, and simultaneously the rate of mutation was extremely low, for some mysterious reasons. Maybe too stable conditions?

I guess some Science should be done, but being worldgen Science it'll be difficult to monitor and even harder to test various changes.

How long was worldgen? In 0.34, I found that the longer worldgen, the more uniform a civ's dwarves seemed to be in appearance.

And since I tended to run 500+ year worldgens, I frequently had dwarven populations that looked almost exactly the same as each other.

There might just not be enough purple type eyes for variation?

I noticed this behavior in .34, actually - not with my dwarves, who usually had similar (but not identical) skin and hair tones, but with the two human civs my old fort had trade/war relations with: one was ginger (ecru skin, crimson hair) and one was tan (burnt umber skin, taupe hair). They both primarily rode camels when they eventually sieged me for using their guild representatives as vampire bait.

Also, yes, the dwarves in this thread are definitely of Old Valyria.

Yup, how about that -- just spun up a new embark, and all seven have cobalt eyes and pink skin. The ones who aren't clean shaven have sandy taupe hair. The game definitely knows about other shades of blue and brown. This was in a 250-year world, but these were also freshly spawned dwarves from an extinct civ. And checking over in a working fort from that civ, every migrant (none of them preexisting historical figures) has the same colors as well.

EDIT: Okay, just embarked again, same world, but using the other, thriving dwarf civ. 7/7 for cobalt eyes, but this time I got seven different skin colors. Five of the dwarves were clean-shaven, the other two had hair that was "goldenrod with a touch of gray" which is really a pretty specific thing to get twice.

EDIT: Third try, different world, thriving civ. Identical hair/skin/eye colors this time. Cobalt eyes again. Out of curiosity, have any of you in 40.0x seen dwarves with something other than cobalt eyes?
