my shadow settings are greyed out and stuck on high...when I get home from work I will try and set them to medium in the config file

Turn lighting up.

IIRC, that should open it.

Anyone know if downloading this version will rectify issues associated with install/uninstall order problems from previous Sims 2 installs? My computer remains convinced that I have Sims 2 University Life installed, so I can't install it, while simultaneously insisting it isn't present whenever I try to remove it so I can reinstall it.

there is a guide for manually uninstalling the stuff I believe...cause you need to remove old versions first

http://help.ea.com/en/article/manual-uninstall-for-sims-2-expansion-and-stuff-packs/

This one downloads as one single download though and you dont have to mess with all that

It's a bit dangerous to fiddle around with regedit if you don't know what you're doing, but it sounds like you've got some problems that would need that to fix it. Basically when you install something a game adds stuff to a registry and when you use the uninstaller it undoes the edits, but if you manually delete sometimes it causes problems.  I recommend searching for a detailed guide on using for sims 2.

I have not got "The Sims 2" but going from previous experience, in the regedit.exe program (You should be able to find it by doing a search in the start menu if you're running Windows XP or Windows 7), look in the folders "Computer:\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts". See if there's a folder in there labelled "Sims 2" or similar, possibly a folder titled "University Life". Try renaming the folder with a 1 on the end and attempt to reinstall the game.

I suggest renaming it rather than deleting because, while I'm sure deleting the folder will have no effect on your computers functioning, it's better safe than sorry.

Edit: It did just occur to me that you could also check the "Add/Remove application" program that comes with Windows. On Windows XP it should be called "Add or Remove Program/Application" or similar and be found in the "Control Panel" section of the "Start Menu".

Looking on Windows 7 and it seems to be called "Programs and Features". Opening the program on either OS will give you a list of all the programs installed on your system. Simply look for an entry for "The Sims 2: University Life", right click it and select "Uninstall".

Of course, both of my suggestions above will probably only work if you have administrative authority on your PC.

I'm pretty sure there are programs which are supposed to remove all traces of uninstalled/deleted things from the registry safely. I can't name any good ones, though, because I have never used them, because I understand the organization of the registry enough to do it myself, and not have to worry about whether or not the tool I'd be installing is legit, or spyware, or a trojan.

I got rid of the black boxes by changing this:
Code: [Select]
option Shadows
   setting $Low
      boolProp simShadows       false
      boolProp objectShadows    false
      boolProp guob             false
      boolProp heightMapShadows false

   setting $Medium
      boolProp simShadows       false
      boolProp objectShadows    false
      boolProp guob             true
      boolProp heightMapShadows true

   setting $High
      boolProp simShadows       false
      boolProp objectShadows    true
      boolProp guob             true
      boolProp heightMapShadows true
end

Wow. When you start the signup process for Origin they automatically translate the site into your local language (Czech, in this case) and there is NO POSSIBLE WAY to switch it until AFTER your account is made. I tried to translate the site with Google translate, and it gave me a fucking error message. It took me ages to manually translate some of the options to make sure I didn't inadvertently sign up for a mailing list.

The very first thing any multi-language site needs to be absolutely sure they do is GIVE THE USER A QUICK, OBVIOUS WAY TO CHANGE THE LANGUAGE rather than just assuming that everyone with an IP address in one country is a native speaker of that country's language. This kind of fuckery really pisses me off on every site I see it on (I'm looking at you, Google). Fortunately I managed to redeem the code without having to download the Origin software, so I can just keep it there in case I ever get a sudden urge to play the Sims again... But at the moment, all they've done is gotten me pissed off at them all over again...

On a related note, this not-even-remotely-as-severe hilarity happened to me on Origin's site:

Ah why not. I'll just uninstall Origins again after I've claimed it :P

Wait, can you uninstall origin and still play? Because Origin is what's really turning me off about this.

I actually like origin. It's better in steam a variety of ways. (Namely a clear refund policy, as well as being able to actually add physical copies of games that are available on origin, to your library. I know that the latter is because EA owns the games, but still.)

That and it works just fine. While I prefer steam, the only problem with origin at the end of the day is that I prefer having only one digital distribution client on my computer.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!
