I have a noob question
« on: July 24, 2014, 05:54:12 pm »

Hello there fellow DF players!

A few months ago, I used to play a lot of Dwarf Fortress, and suddenly stopped for whatever reason. And today, I have gotten back into it. And I cannot for the life of me figure out how to see how much food and drink I have.

Can I only look through a stockpile, or is there a hotkey that I am blindly missing? Please help dear old Urist McDumbshite out.  ;D

try z, and if you want precise numbers on the stocks screen that is available from there, appoint a bookkeeper via the <n>obles screen.

Most of them do require an office, amongst other rooms.

You can check with [n], then select the noble in question.

The bookkeeper is special, and has a unique s option (from the nobles screen) to set her "precision".  You can set the precision to "High", and after a very brief time, your bookkeeper should have the records up to date.  Setting it to "Highest" takes a whole lot longer, and isn't necessary until you have a truly vast number of things to count.

The bookkeeper has to do this work in an office, which is just a room designated from a chair/throne, and assigned to the bookkeeper.  I like to add a table (adjacent to the chair), so she can eat there without getting a bad thought about a lack of tables.

I've gotten to the point where I forget that offices don't require tables. I won't even make an office unless I have a table for it.

This!

But honestly, I don't understand why you wouldn't set your bookkeeper to highest. It doesn't take that much longer, and your counts will always be accurate.

For the bookkeeper I just designate an office out of a dining room chair (with a table next to it). Bookkeepers need only meagre offices and don't mind the hassle of a communal eatery.

It's a question of labor shortage in the early months.  "High" precision doesn't even take a whole week, while "Highest" ties up the dwarf for months.  Once you get a large enough labor pool that you won't miss the bookkeeper for a few months, you can switch it to Highest.

Another thing is, as long as you keep your settings to medium, or high, you can still get skill increases in record keeper for another dwarf, if you swap bookkeepers, if for whatever reason you might want that (stat increases, perhaps?). Once you reach highest precision, it will be hard to train up another record keeper dwarf, cause it will take forever before your records will need updating again (if ever at all). Unless that has changed. Last I know, new bookkeepers inherit the precision reached by the previous one.

" and your counts will always be accurate."

That hasn't been my experience.  Unless I'm simply mistaken, after awhile the accounts go out of whack and require a bookkeeper to update them.

Oh and I agree with the whole 'you don't need your accounts perfect' thing...
