SO MANY NEW FARM OPTIONS! But a question
« on: July 24, 2014, 11:18:28 am »

DIETARY VARIATION GOOOO!

But my question is... I can imagine there's some drawback.. for instance I don't imagine dorfs will eat an onion. It might just be for making better dishes or something.

So.. what's the best to plant and create food for a fort in a rush to make some food?

It depends on your biome. But I would say potatoes, wild carrots, cassava, and radish, since I think you can brew and eat/cook all of them. Any of the v. 34.11 crops would that were brewable still are, so they are a good choice.

If you're in a hurry, the best crop is the plump helmet.  It grows the fastest.  While you're waiting for the crops to grow, you can send out the herbalists to gather anything they can find.

I haven't messed with garden plants yet myself, but perusing the raws, it seems like most (but not all) garden plants have at least one part that is edible raw, plus many have seeds and/or other parts which are edible cooked. Most are not brewable. Theoretically there should be standouts in terms of growth rate and/or food yield, but that would require further study.

Just my luck I have none of them.  ???

If you're seeing onions you should also see grapes, which are edible raw and brewable.

Sweet.

Though I'm guessing the game doesn't show only what you have available in your stocks. (Like culling everything else you don't have seeds for).

Be aware that some (if not all) of the new plants don't process correctly.  The dwarves will pick the entire plant (cranberry vine, for example) and you can't get the fruit as a separate entity.  I have just been avoiding all of them because of that, and don't know if some of them are fully functional.

Gathering plants in rich biome is a nightmare, many of them aren't any good, and I need to get proper processed plants (and often seeds) from elves. Even classic quarry bush is damaged, and you need to repair it in raws. Some plants are partially good (kaniwa or purple amaranth for example, they can be brewed, I can get seeds and plant them, but I seem unable to process them and get edible parts, though I can buy these parts from caravans).

Additionally there seems to be a bug with planting screen if there are too many plants, I see this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Part of plant list is obscured by elements of interface.

Yeah, I get some covered up, same as when I'm trying to plant, and also I have a few that black out randomly. Not sure what they are.

IIRC, I can brew and cook them, just can't see what they are, and I only have one.  The other random ones I don't remember what I could do with them.

so even with all these new stuff, it's best to just stick to the old stock stuff?

I can vouch for radishes, potatoes, parsnips, and barley. These are all gatherable raw and brewable.

We really should put together a list of what plants are currently functional.

I gathered a list of edible raw plant in the adventure mode forum: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=141185.0

The second list, being all fruits, doesn't apply to fort mode yet, but the first and second list seem worth to start with.

But, Kaniwa and purple amaranth aren't on that list, so probly it needs... well... science. But I gues that would just be -*SCIENCE*- instead of !!SCIENCE!!.

Who's up for creating a giant farming fort?

Perhaps a list of what plants are broken and how to fix them should be done? Or if someone has fixed them  in their game upload their raws?

Thanks, I guess I'll start making radish booze!
