Stronghold Crusader II. Release: 3rd September 2014
« on: July 23, 2014, 05:19:04 am »

Here's one that I think looks interesting. I did have fun with the original Stronghold series.
Edit: Added link to their homepage. Thought I was forgetting something.

Now, I am aware that the series has had a bit of a rocky relationship with fans not overly satisfied with Stronghold 2 and 3. I have not played either, so I cannot give an opinion or allay peoples suspicions.

Going from screenshots and bits of gameplay footage, it is looking rather good. Many of the elements look to be exactly the same as they were in the original games, as well as grid placement of walls with player determined thickness and tower positioning.

The art style they've got going is one I rather like. It reasonably detailed and units are easy to pick out from the backgrounds and buildings.

If it does turn out to be more of a 3D update of the original game, with some new features added and some expansion on unit rosters and so on, I can see this being a pretty enjoyable game.

Looks like they're just giving the original game a facelift.
Unless they're not.
I just hope it won't be another Stronghold 3. That game was buggy as hell, had some serious flaws in its design and used a ton of old Stronghold and Stronghold 2 content. Such a disappointment, that one...

oh gods that was what i was hoping for: take Stronghold 1 improve graphics (although that was compeltely unneccesary i still like the Stronghold 1 graphics) and at some small nice improvements. Not that unneccessary crap they added in two and three.

The 2D graphics from the original are still quite fine to look at, and I wouldn't have minded if they'd decided to go with 2D for this sequel. However, in this case it looks like they've gone with 3D without compromising the base mechanics. You know, like, "Custom placed walls cannot be done with the 3D engine we're using".

I do wonder whether they've had to create a new engine from the ground up for this one.

Big fan of Stronghold and Stronghold:crusader.

I've played a bit of Stronghold 2 and 3 and they were pretty terrible.

I have high hopes for this, but I'm not all in until reviews come out saying it's a return to form.

Like most strategy games, Stronghold was one that I really wanted to like despite being terrible at it... maybe this one will be more newb friendly.

I have found that gettings ones hopes up for a game to be closer to an earlier iteration is a silly...that said i would be delighted if this kinda brought it back to the roots

From the trailer that I saw, it appeared to be Stronghold: Crusader but in 3d. The units moved the same, the buildings were the same, everything was the same except you had more than 2 zoom levels and 4 viewpoint angles.

I'm not entirely sure that's all I wanted from a sequel?

I watched quite a long video from some game conference or another and this looked really, really good. It seemed as though they had really understood their mistakes with 3 and had got back to the core ideals of skirmish battles rather than some sort of 'RTS medieval simulator'.

The physics engine for destroying castle walls and things looks great, and it looks like they've made some welcome additions in content and game play.

Really, really excited about this and I thought I was pretty much done with them after Stronghold 3. I am worried (like Anvilfolk) that they might have taken this a litttttle bit too far the other way and not really added enough, but I'm still very excited.

Even if they only added a few unit and a few more defensive building thats enough for me, just the graphical facelift looks real good (Dont throw rocks at me please!) What i mean is anything improving even slightly crusader is a welcome addition in my book. Me and my brother used to spend whole nights and then some playing skirmishes, custom maps etc.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

On the one hand, I've always loved the Stronghold series, especially Crusader. Plus, this is looking pretty good so far.

On the other, Firefly has fucked up pretty much every release they've made since Stronghold 2, with the exception of SC Extreme, which was basically a repackaged SC with some extra AIs and a ridiculously hard additional campaign. So I'm gonna pretend this doesn't exist and if I haven't heard of a Stronghold 3 style release then I'll look into it again.

When asked how you'd be able to see, he said that your first eye would have healed by then.

Yeah I'm a bit worried about Firefly's track record. Stronghold 3 was just so utterly awful that it'll take a lot to bring them back from that. Legends wasn't that much better, and one of the big problems seems to be polish.

Regardless though, it looks like they're back on track and with a more singular aim I'm convinced it'll turn out well.
