How do I unlock 'sort by distance / value' again?
« on: July 22, 2014, 06:57:16 am »

In the trader interface, there's an option that will let you sort tradable goods either by distance to depot, or by trade value.

Now I never had any problems getting that option, and as far as I know, it only requires you to have a broker, and give him an office (even though it's not in the noble screen requirements).

But now, I have broker, who after a few trades with humans and dwarves is a proficient appraiser.
He has an office. But I don't have the option unlocked yet to switch between distance / value, nor can I see the value of my goods when I examine them, or in the trade screen.

What am I missing?

I do have a bookkeeper as well, but afaik that does not matter here.

My first guess is your broker isn't who you think it is.  Maybe you assigned the wrong dwarf.  Are you seeing values on the z screen?

Maybe save and re-load?

I think the dwarf in question bugged out, maybe when I assigned him as broker after the first caravan after embark already arrived (I forgot to set a broker before autumn).
Could also have to do with said first caravan's liaison dying to a tree.

I replaced him with another dwarf, and now the option works as it should.

One more oddity: After unassigning the dwarf from the broker position, he lost his appraising skill, and reverted back from broker to brewer.

Broker isn't a profession - Trader is, and it's what you get from a dwarf whose highest skill is Appraiser.

The first part of that sentence is not correct.

If you appoint them, they are called broker in the unit list.

If their highest skill is appraising, but they are not broker (not sure here, it could be that social skills are higher than appraisal, making trader not override broker), they are called trader in the unit list.

Another possibility for what might have bugged it out:

My second migrant wave brought two migrants who were called 'trader' in the unit list.
At the same time, my bugged broker, a brewer from the first migrant wave, that I installed previously when the dwarven caravan had arrived, was called 'broker'.
Now initially, I made one of those trader migrants my new manager, and the other one got no special job.
I just replaced my broken 'broker' with the second migrant 'trader', who then became a fully functional 'broker', while the original bugged broker became a brewer again, and instantly lost his proficient appraising skill.

In order to get the sort by distance/sort by value option for the trader interface screen, all you need is a broker who has the appraisal skill.
Note: The first dwarf to actually open the trade screen on a given caravan will get a boost to the appraisal screen. But in the goods selection screen to determine what to carry to the depot (which is where you want to sort by distance/value) doesn't count as the first open.

Broker is a position, not a profession - if it was a profession, it would affect strange mood eligibility, but it doesn't, so it isn't.
It just happens that dwarves will display their position instead of their profession when they have one.

Wait what, will non crafting (in the broad sense of the word) professions, like trader (and miller, tresher, shearer... etc.) affect mood eligibility?

They aren't moodable skills, so no.

No, but military professions will - Recruits can enter strange moods, but trained soldiers cannot. Similarly, Children can enter moods but Babies cannot.

Back in 40d and earlier, immigrant Nobles (baron/count/duke/king + consort, tax collector, hammerer, philosopher, and advisor) were similarly exempt from moods, but assigned/elected ones (broker, bookkeeper, manager, mayor, sheriff, and captain of the guard) were not.
