Leave it somewhere for an adventurer to claim. Hide it behind several monsters. Only one who can slay them is worthy of wearing such a symbol.

This. Get a mega beast or too in a cage and hook them to a pressure plate, when the adventure steps on them thay are relased into the artifical lair. Defeat them to take the crown (and any other awesome artifacts you stash there.

I do have a fancy puzzlebox, can you sell artifacts in adventure mode?

Accidentally made over 5000 copper maces once. I have no idea how that happened.

If you are feeling put upon... check out THIS collection of epic useless shit.  Anything not blue is a made artifact.  I've found a use for the recent mace in a weapon trap and... uh... yeah.

No no no. You are focusing on the wrong thing. Lets get back to what is important here, the fact that you have a named shield called "Meltedspurned the Amazing Bowels."

Yes, it was found in a taqueria, stored under the habaneros...

In my current fortress, I've had three artefacts so far:
A fine pewter bucket
A lignite sceptre
A coconut palm amulet

The first two were fey moods, so at least I got legendary skills out of them, and the bucket allowed me to make a high-value well.
The amulet, though...
* A "possessed" mood
* A useless item
* Made of wood
* With wooden images of gems on it, rather than actual gems.

That's the most un-dwarfy item I've had in a long time.  The crafter must have been possessed by an elf spirit.

Edit: just got one that's particularly frustrating.
A planter got a fey mood.  This planter liked crossbows, and had some bowcrafting skills, so I expected he would make we an artefact crossbow.
Unfortunately, he also had some tanning skill, so he claimed a leather workshop and made me a wombat-leather low boot instead.
Now I have a legendary tanner.  Great.

Engraved on the floor is a well-designed image of a kobold and a carp.  The kobold is making a plaintive gesture.  The carp is laughing.

Look on the bright side. If you're dwarf was possessed by an elf's spirit, it's likely that a lot of elves have died in your world.

Three artifacts in current game
All three suck

Mishthemnikuz, The Scholarly Pride, a wax opal window
Vabokavog Inob Usan, Orbdredged the Meal of Murders, a orthoclase bed
Ostathgim, Esteemdtwist, a iron earring

not at ALL.  Put the window in the dining hall for happy thoughts, and when you get a baron, give him the gem bed to shut him up FOREVER.  He will be so happy he won't get out of bed.

The baroness made the window
And I gave her both artifacts
She isn't content
And it's a stone bed not a gem bed

A skirt made from the tail fibre of a "long pig". (well, how else am I supposed to read "Long Pig Tail Fibre Skirt"?) I thought it was only the elves that went in for "long pig".

(yes, I actually knew that. But I did a double-take the first time I read it, and even though I quickly saw what it was actually saying, I prefer to interpret it this way. So there. :) )
