What do you do with hostile caged beasts?
« on: July 21, 2014, 04:07:47 am »

So I caught my first creature attempting to kill my fortress; a Minotaur! But as it is being my first caged creature I am not sure how to properly interact with it such as moving it or disarming it (although I dont think it was carrying anything). Also, what should I do with man/beast/cow? I am considering using it as target practice but I dont want to kill it . . . yet. I am also curious as to how much it is worth trading being a semi megabeast (if it can be traded that is). I want to use for something productive as this is my first real fortress and it is still very much in its infancy (I havent even seen a single goblin yet).

There are quite a few possibilities.

1. Target practice, which is out of question here.

2. Zoo. Make a Trophy room with caged beasts for your Hoppleheads to admire.

3. Death Pit/Labyrinth. Make a place where it can roam relatively free without endangering your Hoppleheads and drop invaders in there as you deem fit.
Or let your pesk...useful Noble Hoppleheads roam in there with it.

4. Similiar to 3. But make it roam in a moat around your fortress.

Hint: If its free your hoppleheads will of course run away of it screaming when they see it, elading to job cancellations. Even if it cant get at them.

Invading beasts and Gobbos generally not.

The best caged beast you can get is a Giant Cave Spider

Is it because they produce webs? Also I am not sure how to move or disarm it as stated above.

Yes, you can make a GCS web farm with them.

Also I am not sure how to move or disarm it as stated above.
When you build a cage with a creature wearing and wielding stuff in it, designate the tile it's built on for unforbidding (goblins arrive with their gear forbidden, I think), then for dumping. Just make sure to manually remove the dump designation from the cage itself. Your dwarves will now strip the caged creature naked and dump all it's gear.

Alternatively, you can go through the stocks screen, and see if you can find the goblin's gear there, and order it unforbidden and dumped. Some people like to only strip them of their weapons, but leave them their clothes, so they'll survive longer in an arena fight. Then this method is what you need.

!FUN! ALERT ON THE MOAT IDEA

Since creatures are able to climb now, you will want to make the walls of it unclimbable. I believe someone mentioned that fortifications stop any climbing. Or that walls made of blocks make it very hard to climb. Or build a floor border OVER the pit's rim.

Otherwise your minotaur would be able to climb out of the moat and go on a rampage.

I just thought of something, but first a few questions: Can you put a lever to a cage to have it open? If I were to say be attacked by (insert hostiles here expect Minotaur) would the minotaur attack these/it granted there were no dwarves in the immediate area? I am thinking that if both answers are yes than I am considering making a back up defense consisting of vicious creatures while my dwarves sit in there hopefully secure bunker. Of course there would at the end of the day be one hostile left, but would be easier to pick off than say an army of goblins.

yes this can be done. (b)uild the cage(j) and link it to a lever. when the lever is pulled the cage will topple and its inhabitant set free. megabeasts and semimegabeasts will attack the gobos, but the minotaur may not last long against an invading army, unless he wrests a gobbo weapon
