I had the same problem. Your stdc++ libraries need to be updated.
I am running Ubuntu 14.04
After a bunch of googling, here's what I did

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-toolchain-r/test
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Copy everything from your old DF/data/save folder to your new DF/data/save folder.

 It should include a new [16x16] Obsidian graphics pack 40.x unofficial update, DFhack 40.11 R1 (gcc 4.9.1), and  v25  Dwarf Therapist for 40.11.

Hey guys, having a little problem with LNP
I use the version for df 40.12 which was posted before today without DF hack included.

When I launch df through LNP it simply exits immediately with exit status 0. I haven't tampered with any configuration or launcher files. I've made sure that I have permission to execute everything in the LNP directory and that it is owned by me. Still nothing. I also followed an earlier suggestion and made sure my stdc++ libraries were up to date.
The problem persists for root. Curiously, the gui looks totally different (way better) when I run LNP as root, do you know why this is? Is it connected to the main problem?

I use ubuntu 14.04.

I bet I'm not the only one who has had this problem, so there is probably an easy fix, right?

Happily, while looking for the answer I noticed the dfhack version had been released, and that version didn't have the same issue. Honestly I didn't bother experimenting with it any further since the new version seems to work.

They are using R0, which didn't include dfhack.

In a certain version of R0, 40.12,  i may have had the pack/LNP/lnp.yaml pointing at DFhack, when there is no DFhack. It was fixed shortly after i found it by pointing to DF instead.

As for the reason why the font changes when using root is probably because of a option set in the .bashrc/.profile that changes the font, i think its "export _JAVA_OPTIONS='-Dawt.useSystemAAFontSettings=setting'" but i could be wrong. It does look a lot nicer.

But please do not run the LNP with root privileges
