Attack on Titan Tribute Game - Twelfth Bay now Recruiting!
« on: July 20, 2014, 01:25:52 pm »

So after much searching, I did not find a thread for this game. I was rather dissapointed, and decided to make one.
The AoT Tribute Game is a browser-based game based on the critically acclaimed anime and manga Attack on Titan.
Quote from: Wikipedia
Over one hundred years prior to the beginning of the story, giant humanoid creatures called Titans  suddenly appeared and nearly wiped out humanity, devouring them without remorse or reason. What remains of humanity now resides within a country surrounded by three enormous concentric walls: the outermost is Wall Maria; the middle wall is Wall Rose and the innermost is Wall Sina. Inside these walls, humanity has lived in peace for one hundred years; many people growing up without ever having seen a Titan. This all changes when one day, within Eren Yeager's hometown, the Shiganshina district which juts out of Wall Maria, a giant 60-meter (200 ft) tall Titan known as the Colossus Titan mysteriously appears and breaches the outer wall, allowing smaller but still deadly Titans to infiltrate the district. Many are killed and the wall separating Shiganshina from the lands within Wall Maria is breached when a second Titan smashes clean through. Mankind is forced to abandon the land between Wall Maria and Wall Rosé, evacuating the remaining population into the inner districts. The sudden influx of population causes turmoil and famine.

The Titans are giant humanoids, usually masculine in form and naked (but lacking genitalia). They vary between 3 and 15 meters in height, with the exception of the so-named Colossus Titan. Titans appear to instinctively attack and devour humans on sight. Despite this behavior, they apparently do not require food for sustenance, as they do not prey on animals and have survived for one hundred years in a human-free environment prior to the inner wall breach. Most of their energy has been found to come from sunlight, though they remain active, however sluggish, in the absence of light. Their skin is tough and difficult to penetrate and they have the ability to regenerate from injuries, even the loss of their head, after a short time. The Titan's only apparent weakness is a spot on the nape of the neck which, when cut deep enough, effectively kills the Titan. This revelation led to the development of the Vertical Maneuvering Equipment which allows trained humans to navigate quickly in a three-dimensional space. Although it permits great mobility to a skilled user, it carries a large risk of overtaxing the muscles, requiring extensive physical conditioning and agility.

Quote from: The Plot
The story of Attack on Titan centers around the adventures of Eren Yeager, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their friend Armin Arlert. After the wall which protects Eren's hometown is breached by Titans, including the 60-meter skinless Colossus Titan and the abnormally intelligent Armored Titan, a young Eren suffers the death of his mother at the hands of a Titan. Once Eren and his friends are evacuated from the district to safety, he vows revenge against all Titans and later enlists in the military, accompanied by Mikasa and Armin. After a period of grueling training, the three elect to join the Survey Corps which would allow them to leave the safety of the walls and fight the Titans one-on-one. Following graduation, the three are positioned in District Trost which juts out into the Titan-infested lands of Wall Maria. However, they are surprised by the sudden appearance of the Colossus Titan which breaches the wall as it did to Eren's hometown 5 years prior.

During the ensuing battle with Titans, Eren discovers, by accident, that he possesses the ability to transform into a Titan at will. Though he is seen as a threat to mankind, many others, including those within the Survey Corps, see Eren's ability as a ray of hope in the fight against the Titans. Eren's strong resolve and his ability to kill other Titans with relative ease earns him a valued position within the Survey Corps, alongside Mikasa and Armin. With the threat of new Titans and a possible end to society, Eren and his companions begin a desperate fight to protect what remains of mankind while unraveling the secrets and mysteries behind the Titans, the walls, and even Eren's own existence, with the truths hidden by political rivalries and the royal family, of which Eren's squadmate Krista Lenz seems to be at the center of.
The game itself, created by a Chinese developer called Feng Lee, focuses less on the plot, and more on the killing of Titans and using the Vertical Maneuvering Equipment. There is a fairly decent multiplayer, as well as several maps and multiple characters to use. Each character has a special attack/ability, such as Mikasa's ground pound-esque slam-the-ground attack, or Levi's spin attack.
The game itself.

Spoiler: Tips from Nighthawk (click to show/hide)

I was thinking of making a Bay12 group, where we'd organise Titan-kill fests and such. Does that seem like a good idea?
Also, this OP is probably terrible, so if anybody would be able to make a better one, go ahead.

I feel for ya, man. My first few games consisted of me being repeatedly eaten by Titans. Eventually managed to kill two via a combination of blinding them and then killing them. Tried the same tactic on a third titan, and got eaten. Again.

I played it a while a few months back. Thoughts are thus:

- Not easy to figure out.
- Once you DO figure it out, it's a blast.
- Crawlers are OP as hell.
- Saving a friend from a grab is the best feeling ever.
- Potatoes are drugs.
- Never, ever, ever, EVER fight Annie. You will die.

In other words, great game. Better when you have friends so you can respawn, though.

My only advice is don't give up too quickly. If you practice and get good at it, you can bring down titan after titan (which is immensely satisfying) but the game still retains a level of challenge, because there's a lot of opportunity to screw up and die.

Just straight at the back of the neck and pray you dont die.

The best way to learn the game is really to play it, but if anyone wants tips, I have a few:

- CHANGE YOUR CAMERA. I recommend always using TPS mode for maximum control. If you forget to activate TPS mode before you start, you can also hit C a few times to change camera types. Switch camera types until you get the mode where the crosshair is always in the center of the screen.

- CHANGE YOUR CONTROLS. If you have not done so already, I recommend altering controls to these keybindings:
Jump/Gas: Spacebar
Evade: Left Ctrl
Left Grapple: Left Click
Right Grapple: Right Click
Double Grapple: Whatever you want
Main Attack: Q, but that's just what I use. You can use whatever floats your boat... or, kills your titan.
Secondary Attack: E, but again, that's just me. Use what's convenient for you.

You might be looking at those and thinking, "Not using mouse-clicks as my attack buttons? Is he nuts?" Trust me - having all grappling-related controls bound to your mouse helps enormously.

- Never be on the ground behind a titan. You will be grabbed.

- If you mis-grappled and have slammed into a titan in the wrong spot, don't try to be a hero and flop your way to its nape. Get the HELL away as fast as you can. To reiterate: if you're touching the titan's body anywhere other than the nape, you're in danger, and you need to abort.

- You can use the gas button in conjunction with WASD to slowly accelerate in any direction. Use it to get around titans by grappling one side of their head and then propelling so that you slingshot around them. (Grapple right side of head, hold gas and D, or grapple left side of head, hold gas and A.)

- Gas only gets consumed in 2 ways: Having your grappling hook attached to an object, and using a double-tap dash. You will consume ZERO gas by holding down the gas button while jumping, despite the fact that you see little gas clouds popping out of your character. So if you want to really minimize wasted gas, launch yourself in the air and jetpack long distances by holding the jump button rather than repeatedly grappling.

- Using both left and right hook at the same time (not with the double-hook command, but actually hitting both individual hook buttons simultaneously) on a target will reel you in MUCH faster, but you're pretty much stuck going in a straight line. Use this if you want to super-accelerate straight at a titan's nape.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try them out as soon as I have access to a computer again.
By the way, what should we call ourselves if we are to make a squad?

I cant use the controls you set up Nighthawk. I played with the default ones for a while before, and now I am stuck being used to them.

Well, it's your prerogative. I just found that it was much more useful to have the ability to use WASD freely (in order to gas-boost) while grappling without having to do some crazy thing with my fingers. If you can, do try to get used to "my" controls, because I really think they would help you in the long run. If you don't want to, eh. I won't be insulted.

Anybody up for a multiplayer game, anyway?
Don't know if I'll have an opportunity today, but if you host a server with Bay12 in the name, I'll join on the off chance I see it.
