Solium Infernum PBEM - Game Finished
« on: July 19, 2014, 02:50:53 pm »

Anyone up for a game of Solium Infernum? 4-6 player game would be nice to get going.  Settings are negotiable but I'll put my preferred ones below. I already have lijacote on board so we only need 2-4 guys more to fill the roster. I can host the game.

Players:
Delta Foxtrot - Delta
lijacote - Dumah
Karlito - Ciacco
Cheeetar - Durus
Il Palazzo - Davi Owie
E. Albright - Miranda

Settings:
Map size - Normal
Map type - Lake of Fire
Places of power - Uncommon
Game length - Normal
Infernal census - No
Rectification expansion - Yes

Spoiler: Map of Hell, turn 1 (click to show/hide)

___

And for the uninitiated: What is Solium Infernum? More in the spoiler.

A multi perspective AAR from Rock Paper Shotgun with four of the six players chronicling their game as it went on. Jolly good read that sparked my interest in the game.

I can link up some more help resources if someone ends up buying the game and wants to join this one. There's a few good ones that helped me get up to speed really fast.

I think I have this game from a while back. Probably interested, let me remind myself how this all works. Additional help resources appreciated.

This two-part picture heavy tutorial helped me get over the UI and basic concepts pretty fast. Beware, it has a sense of humour. The actual help is very solid though even if it's not to your taste.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/27948141/Solium-Infernum-Tutorial-2

That combined with some goofing/playing around with the game a bit got me pretty confident on my abilities to actually play the game. As always with this kind of game, you can reference the manual for some specific info.

If you want more text to go with your startup help, I found this series of posts informative. It start as an AAR of sorts but evolves into general concept guides.

Way of the Game Part 3
Way of the Game Part 4
Way of the Game Part 5
Way of the Game Part 6

I'll link these to the OP as well.

Great, now we only need one more player to get a proper game rolling.

My aim with the proposed settings is that the game won't be too long. SI seems to have a nice bit of design that prevents the monumental lategame bloat of something like Dominions, that coupled with semihard cap on game length should mean we can get this game done before 2015. And if this catches on (a man can dream) we can use the settings here as a baseline. Make it a bit bigger, a bit shorter etc..

fake-edit:

And Cheeetar is in too. Ace. How would you guys feel if we waited until next friday or thereabouts before starting the game? You can figure out your arch fiends and it would give us a chance to get a five or six player game going. I know SI is a bit of a niche game and I'm not convinced we'll get full six players, but it'd be nice to give it a chance. If democracy wishes us to just get started tonight, I can do that too of course.

I'd prefer to wait for a more full game.

I'd like six, certainly, but I would prefer to start before Friday. I'm a glutton for games, what can I say.

A pentad of players is pretty good, y'know, for all dat satanism. Not that six is a slouch either.

What the hell, I'm in.

By the way, I don't remember a damned thing about how it's played, so give me some time to reread the manual and play a short vs-AI game.

Yeah, I could use a couple days as well. I'll be fine to start by midweek.

I would prefer to have everyone playing turn #1 by sunday next week, so by all means feel free to (re)acquaint yourselves with the game during the early week.

Ideally we play roughly one turn every one or two days. Since I have to be up and about to process the turns, we probably can't keep quite the same pace as Dominions games do with automated llamaserver. If you guys can't or won't cope with that pace, let me know. We can always go a bit slower if need be but a good pace keeps the interest up for all involved.

Edit:
I found some cheat sheets to help clarify some information and their relations. Far as I can tell it's all from the manual, but more ordered.

By the way, is this game resolving turns absurdly slow for anyone else? It takes a couple of minutes on my 4x2.8 GHz AMD.

It does feel very heavy. I have a worse computer than you do, though.

I played the first ten turns and got at worst a minute long turn, most were in the 20 second range though, going as low as 3 seconds once. I do have a quad 3.4 GHz though. I guess it's fair to say that it's not an optimized game.

I remember this game being pretty slow when I was learning it last year, and thought that was the fault of the laptop I was using at the time, but it's still seems to chug a little on my faster PC.
