Reclaim Awesomeness in .40.03
« on: July 18, 2014, 08:53:29 am »

Haven't posted here in a long time but the ability to reclaim historical fortresses in the new version got me so excited I had to share!

In 125, I reclaimed a fortress from around the year 40 that had been overrun by a forgotten beast.  The fortress came complete with a giant two-story roofed above-ground structure containing a trade depot, a rampway down to the fortress itself, which takes up many, many floors, a paved roadway through the Caverns and 135 forges.  Curiously, the forges are constructed from raw stone and a steel throne.  This must be ancient forgotten dwarven smithing lore at work.  There was a giant olm wandering about the caverns, which could have been disastrous, but it wandered into the old fortress so Urist McClever just locked it in a room.  After I wall off the ramps so nothing more can get in, we will be trapping it to tame as a pet.

I really like not only the flavor of reclaiming a forgotten mountainhome, but the jumpstart you get on the fun by having bedrooms and workshop areas already carved out for you.

Does anyone else have some fun stories to share of the new reclaims?

Cool. That entrance is much nicer looking than what I usually make, except is it reachable by wagons? It looks like the 3 wide entrance exits directly into a 1 wide alley between the wall and cliffside.

 :o

Can wagons climb?

Nope it's not (well it is now, after I posted the screenshot my miner dug out a 3X3 passage in the nearby sand).  What madness possessed the early settlers of that fortress still eludes me.

I dunno if it changed, but my depot remained unreachable in a reclaim until I deconstructed then reconstruction it. Just saying.

Beware the FB. Unless your starting seven have a few levels in discipline, they won't even dare go near it, even if to kill it all you would need is a single attack.

Good Luck exploring why the fort has been abandoned for 85 years. Also, try not to get lost. I find these places maze-like at times.
Ah yes, you have to unforbid the buildings, in case you haven't noticed. That may have been the problem with my depot earlier.

When I reclaimed a worldgen fort, the entrance to the building was right up against the edge of the embark. I had to tear up a bunch of the building to goblin-proof it, and because I forgot about the deconstruction teleport bug, all my food rotted because it was spending more time teleporting from place to place instead of in the food stockpile.

Yeah, took me a bit to figure that one out, but that is the problem. If you unforbid the trade depot, it becomes reachable and the (D)epot access screen starts working.

This will be fixed in the next version:

This is cool, thanks! It's not exactly the same, but check out my reclaim/archeology story:

Also, more on point, this is not mine, but awesome:  http://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/2awaej/the_horror_of_the_death_shaft/

Super glad to see some love for these procedural fortresses!

Wow, very cool!  BTW, how do you know which sites can be reclaimed?

R on the embark map lists possible reclaims if they exist. Walls on the surface can be built from metals or metal ores. Platinum fortress ftw.

The site selection map screen has a key you can press listed at the bottom to do a reclaim.  It'll present you a list of sites, and you can press tab to find out information about them, such as how and when they were abandoned.

The first worldgenned fort I tried to reclaim was listed as being ruined by a forgotten beast. The fort wound up releasing demons due to the magma forges intersecting an adamantine spire. As soon as I embarked and unpaused, "Horrifying screams come from the darkness below!"

So, yeah. That can happen.

It occurs to me that the throne-forges hold the long-lost secret of the First Anvil, which has since days of old been a topic of speculation among fans. Of course, now the question is how they shaped the steel thrones without an anvil...I suppose they could've started with a magma-safe stone throne, since unlike stone anvils, those do at least exist.
