Nice crater
« on: July 18, 2014, 03:57:42 am »

This was discovered a few days ago in Siberia.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2kMs05VaOfE

Speculation so far assumes it was created when an underground natural gas pocket exploded.

It's a .... big, eerie looking hole...

Speculate away folks!

EDIT: okay I'll kick off. The near perfect round shape makes it hard for me to believe that this was caused by a natural explosion from below the ground. Perhaps they goofed the depth estimates for their latest nuclear test? Then again, I'm not sure if I'd want to fly a helicopter that close if that were the case. :P

Didn't watch the video, but I have a theory.

In the age of Myth there was a fortress that was held up by a single support. FUN ensued.

So are there more of these random dirt explosions to come if the earth keeps heating up?

I'm not a geologist, although sometimes I wish I was because rocks are awesome, but it looks like something went down, not up.

Then why is there debris all around the hole?

Its shape seems to indicate something weird- It's almost cylindrical, but then it goes outwards once it reaches the surface, as if someone drilled a hole then blew up the top part.

...because the material being bored through had to go somewhere? Dug holes tend to have debris around the mouth.

The statement that it seemed like something went down, rather than up, i.e that something bored, dug, whatever, through the ground.

I have no evidence of any sort as to what caused the hole, just - if something /had/ gone down through the ground to make it, they would have left debris like that.

Whereas what you said implied that that would not be the case.

Maybe something did bore a hole in the ground, and the slanted bit is the debris. *shrug*
