I also liked Grabbed by the Ghoulies. People always seem to review it as a straight-up horror game. It's not. It's a commedy beat-em-up with decent challenge and fun cartoony violence.

Huh, I'm pretty sure I remember that getting a good/decent review from the gaming magazine I used to read... I never played more than the demo, though. Speaking of that magazine, I stopped reading them when they gave Canis Canem Edit a score of something like 70/100- that game was brilliant great.
70/100 is pretty good.

EDIT: Whoops wait I forgot this is gaming, where even a dog shit in a CD case would get 5/10 from IGN if there were a few pennies in there as well.

Yeah... well, this mag wasn't as bad as IGN, I don't think, but compared to other games they reviewed 70/100 was a terrible score.
I think they gave a couple of games a perfect score in that magazine, and I failed to see why CCE wasn't deserving of the same... and then shortly after I failed to see why I was wasting my money on the magazine in the first place. :P

The 3D Zelda games (except Wind Waker because MUH CEL SHADED) are starting to get more of a backlash nowadays, but I still really like them. Maybe because the N64 is the console I played most, but I have more patience (read: nostalgia goggles) for the faults of the 3D Zelda games.

World of Warcraft tends to get panned around here and other RPG circles, but honestly I don't mind it. Sure it's casual and easy, but I've never understood why casual is a bad thing. Sometimes I want to space out and grind some quests while chatting with the guild. :-\

I have never understood the reaction to Battletoads. I'd say Mega Man games are harder than Battletoads on average, but people can't get enough of those. The music is catchy, the levels are incredibly varied and the action is solid. Typical Rare quality, but people hate it without even playing it because of the AVGN review. People online who played Battletoads first and then saw the AVGN video typically react along the lines of "Wait, this is considered a bad game?"

...People consider Battletoads a bad game? I mean, I could see it being called an overly punishing game. I could see it being called overwhelmingly average. But bad? I really can't see why anyone would think that the game as a whole is bad. Now, Turbo Tunnels by it's self, maybe...

I enjoyed Final Fantasy: Chrystal Chronicles a bit too much for my own good, and that game was slammed by most magazines. Frankly, it's the only Final Fantasy I've played. I still own it, too.
...Wait. People didn't like Crystal Chronicles? Why?!
I mean, the games not perfect, obviously, but I still found it to be a lot of fun.

I also really enjoyed crystal chronicles. But I sorta had a issue that the further you got into that game the more you missed out on without playing multiplayer. And the game had that issue where you lost your moogle helper in multiplayer. Maybe with more then two people it would have been okay, but I only ever played with two. Two player multiplayer wasn't fun. And single player felt lacking in some way to me.

Edit: Oh, also as the game went on the story and the world got so complex that I had issues keeping a handle on it. I was a very stupid 12 year old.

Yeah, Battletoads by itself isn't bad, but it is pretty hard. But, I'd say you're wrong about Mega Man games being harder than Battletoads, since Mega Man games give you passwords, E-Tanks and later games have the shops where you can buy items from. Though I'd say that Mega Man 1 would in fact be comparable in, if not surpass Battletoads in difficulty, though it becomes a lot more easier if you use the glitch :P

Eh, I may edit something into this later. Sorry for rambling.

Master of Orion 3.
I'm with you on that one.  I'm not even sure I could explain exactly why I liked it, but I found myself enjoying it more than most space 4x's and kept going back to it despite its obvious flaws and unfinished bits.

Dungeon Siege, the first one. I adore that game, even to this day. As far as I know, reviews were mixed at best and most people don't seem to remember it fondly, but I feel that certain ineffable quality while playing it, that indescribable texture that rubs you in all the right ways. For its time, it looked gorgeous, and ran smooth as silk. I still hear that creaking sound from the treetops in the forests. The satisfying 'hack' or 'fwoom' when your attack hits an enemy. Watching arrows glide through the air, and then gruesomely impaling their target, turning him (or you) into a walking pincusion. Watching the loot spin out of a corpse and land with an audible 'thud'. The growl of the wolves as you're ambushed from the surrounding bushes.

Yeah, it was a pretty mindless, and often clunky dungeon romp, and the story was forgettable, but the environments were not. Nor was the audio. For me, it was the most satisfying 'brain = off' game I ever played. And it had multiplayer! Either co-op or online, with drop-in drop-out, locally hosted rooms. It's still playable with something like GameRanger, but good luck actually finding anyone to play with. :(

I once shot a bear in the eye with a bow on the first shot, cut it up, found another one, and shot it in the eye too. The collective pile of meat weighed more than my house.

Oh yes, Dungeon Siege. I still go back to it. The level design on that game was insanely detailed, with lots of hidden areas, places that had no purpose other than looking cool, that sort of stuff. Hell, they even made a multiplayer/lan only campaign to go with the base game. For free, too. Also, apparently they got some pretty good quality textures in it, which you can see if you edit certain files to play at higher resolutions.

Dwarf Fortress, if everyone I've talked to IRL is any indication. :P

On Digimon World 1
Really? but it was a really fun game.

I thought so. I think the timing was bad as well. Tamagotchi and pokemon had recently hit the market and I can't think of many other games that don't let you control the battles directly. You know the "FUN" part! None of this raising a companion nonsense (Which ironically, was kind of the core of the show if I remember... The game holds up a bit better through time actually imo). And you know... cashing in on kids shows.

Nowadays someone would probably notice that it's actually a good game with gameplay that is fairly non-standard, but interesting to many.
They actually just released a spiritual sequel to this in 2012 with an identical gameplay system and plenty of references to the original game (meat farms!). Digimon World Re:Digitize for PSP and Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode for 3DS. So, apparently you were right. :P

Too bad the chances of it seeing an official English-language release are very, very low. (There's an almost-complete fan translation patch for the PSP one pending though)

The first Dungeon Siege was great, I spent a lot of time in multiplayer with randoms on that one.  My only real complaint about it was the terriblye balance across the spells, too many that just weren't worth even considering with a handful that outshone the rest by a huge margin.

I found the sequel fairly disappointing by comparison (and really didn't like the demo I played of the third one).

Dungeon Siege 1 I loved, but I think part of that might have been that it was one of the first in the genre between Diablo style hack and slash and Baldurs Gate style heavy story games.

The second and the third were just awful though, but by that point they seemed rather outdated and I do wonder if I played DS1 again if I'd feel it to be similarly rough.

Oh. You know, I really liked Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader. The world was great. The ideas were great. And the first city was great. And then the game just turned into a mediocre diablo clone after that. But I really still quite enjoyed it. Apparently it has a 57 on metacritic, which isn't quite panned, but it's not very good ether.

But... but I liked dungeon siege 2... it was refreshing to see that amount of corn and cheese after the hours-long marches through Ominous Gray Woods #5 from the first game.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.
