Where did I go wrong . . . with my wells
« on: July 17, 2014, 03:01:03 pm »

I attempted to experiment with making 2 wells. One near my hospital and one near my dining area. Being it was an experiment I sort of was expecting to mess up, and simply reloading and doing it again until I got it right. Trial and error. Then I waited too long and fun ensued. See I forgot it auto saves when a new season begins. So I am stuck with elven traders, 30+ migrants, snatchers and a few goblin thieves and a fortress just about ready to flood . . . Kind of in need of help. I can handle all the other fun just fine, but its the flooding that I am unsure how to control. Anyone want to take a look and see how I can circumvent this? Oh and its 34.11

Also I know fortresses are suppose to die at some point, but I feel like I should leave that to something else like a dragon or an army of goblins.

Once a flood has begun they tend to run their course unless there is a single choke point you can wall up in time to save yourself. If the flood began through a diagonal tile you might be in luck since it won't be spreading under pressure so you may have time to respond. Your best bet if you can't stop it is to burrow your dwarves above the flood line to keep as many of them as you can from drowning and then build around the flooded chambers. Oddly enough, I find magma floods easier to control because they move slower.

My guess is you tapped a water source that starts out above your well and now water is rushing up out of it like an overflowing toilet?

Dude  region6 and you were using a graphic pack.  Oh my

This . . . is, btw, not what default ASCII looks like.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As we can see, the well is on the top right, and the second well in question is two levels below.

Okay.  Your problem is a lack of pressure control.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/v0.34:Pressure

making diagonal pathways will eliminate pressure.

What I did was make a cistern from the river water below the fortress and have a screw pump take water out of it into a smaller cistern where the wells would sit over, screw pumps will never cause water to rise above the level above them.
