Dwarves getting stuck on cliffs
« on: July 17, 2014, 02:10:14 pm »

I embarked on a new area and the wagon spawned near a shear cliff. Before I had even deconstructed the wagon most of my dwarves had wandered off the edge and are now clinging for dear life. Is this a bug?

I find that they randomly climb onto trees sometimes and just sit there for a day or two. I don't think it's anything bad since they eventually come down for me anyways, so I wouldn't worry.

Train dem ninjas.

I assume it's some kind of pathing bug with climbing - I've had several dwarves climb trees and die of thirst before coming down, and one who climbed 20 Z levels up a cavern wall, traversed far into the unexplored areas of the cave, and then stood there on a high ledge refusing to climb until I dug a stair to him. He had unhappy thoughts from starving, being dehydrated, not having a bed, not having a chair, and not having a table...

They all ended up falling to their death in the river below after a while. I guess I won't be building a shanty town along a cliff face any time soon.

I had to set my cliff apartment idea aside for a while too. Eventually I expect climbing will be changed enough that it's doable.

As far as I know, idle dwarves will look for something to climb on, similar to how idlers will socialise and gain social skills.
There have been reports of dwarves climbing down wells, volcanoes, and other less-than-ideal places. The act of climbing in and of itself is not a bug, but the way it is handled is still fairly glitchy.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

It's not the climbing that's the problem, it's the dwarves not being able to do anything at all except eventually fall to their death.

They're just afraid of heights is all. They climb up a tree (or down a cliff) and then look down and see how far away from the ground they are. Then they lock up from fear.

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

I'm not your average Bay12er. I care about my drunken midgets.
