Bone armor
« on: July 17, 2014, 10:00:17 am »

So i want to theme my archer squad with a lot of bones, and how do i get them to have bone greaves/bone gauntlets/bone helms as part of the uniform? bone doesnt show as a material for those items.

If I remember correct, Bone armor is counted as metal armor. Yeah, don't ask.
So either use metal armor, or any armor.

Select "specific armor" and select your bone armor.

Bone is listed as metal for some reason. But! There is a workaround. Unless you have some artifacts, bone is the only white "metal" in the game (AFAIK), so if you just set the colour of all their metal items to be white then they should wear bone.

Always a safe default assumption in this game

You can also assign to them specific armours, though that can be a bit more finnicky and may be a bit arduous if you have to parse through long lists of armour.

I've always thought that bone was grouped with leather, shell certainly is.
Explains the piles of unused bone armour in my previous forts. :-/

Bone is also surprisingly efficient as armor.
It absorbs blunt damages surprisingly efficiently (I wonder if it's due to bones having higher IMPACT_ELASTICITY?), and seems more or less invulnerable to claws and bites.
It's also fairly good against lower-grade metals.

Overall, it's an excellent early armor, when the biggest threat comes from wild animals and an occasional large copper dagger.

There's stuff like tin and aluminum, but bone is the only one that can be used in armor or weapons.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.
