Looking at legends mode in old versions, it looked like the youngest child would inherit first.  It would be interesting to see if that's still the case(I imagine it is) and if it applies in Fortress mode.  At least in the one world I remember looking at, there were several cases where the heir was the youngest of like 5 or 6 children, with many older siblings still alive.

Unrelated, except maybe to the succession science idea, but anyone having trouble getting relationships started? It seems much slower than in the past, even with socialization chambers. Trying to run a generational fort with 20 population limit, have 11 female and 10 male, ranging anywhere between 50 and 100 years old. Plenty are within marriable age of each other, yet after years only one couple have become lovers, not even married.
I could just edit the raws and mess around with orientation to make marriages more likely (could I? not even sure if that's how it works), but I'd rather it stay vanilla for testing purposes. I'm guessing the added incompatibility between the new character traits and goals (desire to start a family, etc) are more relevant than orientation in any case, but again, still not quite sure how orientation works.

In the current version, a significant percentage of dwarves (25%?) are either gay or will never marry, never progressing beyond "lovers" status with their partner. You have to mod the dwarf creature entry to solve this by adding this tag:

Code: [Select]
ORIENTATION:1:0:0

If you want to learn how it works in more detail there's a fortress mode thread called equal rights where th he initial discovery of that token was made. Around page eight, I think, people start discussing the token and how it works specifically. It's more difficult to understand than you would think it is.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

I've updated the Marriage page with the basics.

Thanks for the wiki update. And yeah, I posted in that thread, ironically gloating about how this would reduce the hordes of children common in 200+ forts. Didn't really think it would affect possible relationships that much. With 20 dwarves you'd expect a couple of breeders at least.
So I'm getting this right, I have to add 2 tags per caste, if I only want breeders:

For females:
[ORIENTATION:MALE:0:1:1]
[ORIENTATION:FEMALE:1:0:0]

For males:
[ORIENTATION:FEMALE:0:1:1]
[ORIENTATION:MALE:1:0:0]

Edit: Oh nm I was still under the impression the progression went from lover to married. So 1:0:0 and 0:0:1. I guess there are no more dwarven shotgun weddings, where lovers get married automatically because one of them gave birth.

There won't be any babies outside of wedlock.  Dwarves can't become pregnant until they are married (to a male).

I have a female King.  A few hours after embark she became one.  She likes to attend meetings.

IIRC [ORIENTATION] needs values up to 100 to bring back the old system. Putting 1 in would mean 1% of dwarves have that orientation.

I'm pretty sure it's a ratio. So 5:1:0 would make five in six dwarves fall into the first category, one in six the second, and zero in six the third.

Yes, Toady confirmed that this is how it works.
