Prepared food values nerfed?
« on: July 15, 2014, 09:52:03 pm »

Was the formula for prepared food values heavily nerfed? I prepared five pots packed full of lavish meals for my first caravan, and they were worth about 50 - 75 DB each. Even accounting for a no-skill broker that seems way lower than I've ever seen. I admit it would make sense considering how insanely valuable food was before. It would also ruin my "pack nothing but turkeys" embark strategy, but I can adjust...

I remember haveing values of 2000-3000 bucks per barrel each, yes it was overkill.
I havent tested it yet but going to do on occation.
Personally i wouldnt mind it being nerfed, they were so valuable its almost game breaking.

I got the normal (insane) going rates for prepared food in .40.03. Are you sure you didn't mess around with the game (install incompatible add-ons or something)?

They were nerfed quite a few version ago, but still make decent money.
Food used to make 10s of thousands a piece, before that. Now that was really crazy, 3 quarry bush leaf roasts could buy out an entire caravan back then.

Prepared meals no longer receive a top-level quality modifier. Each individual ingredient still receives its own modifier. This makes ingredient value and number of ingredients more important, since there isn't a default "10 x quality" to carry the value. The net result is a reduction of 0-110 db value per meal--which may sound like a lot, but the lavish meal value range is 14-1210 db. Another way of looking at it is to compare the prepared meal value (10) to the ingredient values (1-25, and you get four of them in a lavish meal); if your ingredients are poor (4xtallow: total value 4) then the 10 is larger, and the meal has lost significant value (up to 70%). If your ingredients are good (cheese, flour, etc.) with combined value of 20+, then the 10 is less important and the meal suffers a less than 30% reduction in value.

I ran the numbers for several meals in my fortress and they worked out correctly; if you want to test your own meals you can use the formula on the wiki (use the item value table to look up your ingredients). Do use the actual value from the [k] "look" menu, not your broker's guesstimates.

Fair enough, guess it was my broker.

I was mistaken; prepared meals are still capable of receiving a top-level quality modifier. Apparently my cooks were just being uncooperative.

Anyway, I have now confirmed the values on a number of meals match the values predicted by the calculations on the wiki from v0.34. I suppose prepared meal values could still have been reduced in the trading interface...

I welcome the rebalance of trade in favor of the traders.  Too much easy money and too easy to make masterpieces.  Also, that plump helmet roast you made 6 months ago isn't going to make it back to the human homelands, its not magic.
