So we can edit them and give them armor/shield.

They would show up on the uniform screen and could not be deleted. And would always include a pick/Axe/xbow that couldn't be removed.

I support this 100%. It's those 3 civilian professions that need the most armoring and currently they're stuck with whatever clothing we have around. In addition, if they're a part of a squad they should prefer that uniform. If the uniform has the appropriate weapon for the job assigned to it they should use that weapon for military and work. If not, then they keep the work tool strapped to them.

I think I was able to armor them by setting them up in a reserve unit, equipping them without weapons but other stuff, alerting them to get them equipped, then getting them (eventually) to start doing their normal task again.  But AFAIK using them to _fight_ is impossible, since the first thing they want to do is get rid of their weapon.  (I don't know if this was changed very recently, doubt it)  Mostly I want to be able to equip the chopper with the specific axe I say, specific armor I say, have him wear the stuff all the time while working, and when I alert he keeps wearing the stuff and attacks.

Another thing is that "over clothing" "replace clothing" remains confusing.  Does hitting the button change it _to_ that option, or is that the option already set?  In practice fooling around I have decided one way and then the other and given up trying to know.

Over clothing means they'll wear their civilian clothes, if they have any, underneath their armor. Most people use Replace Clothing because shoes and caps kinda prevent boots or helms from being put on.

I support this. Although if they were untrained armor should slow down them considerably.

General civilian uniforms would be nice.

I like this idea. It would make it much easier to implement my "everyone's a miner until Legendary and then is conscripted" policy.

Looks like nobody's posted the link I expected to bug 1451 yet.

This is not the only thread I have found on this subject.  There was another one called "Miners, woodcutters, and hunters".  I prefer the title of this thread over that one.  It is a quick and succinct description of what we want to do.

I do have a post in that thread to refer to, because I spotted it first while trawling through the Suggestions list.

I'm hoping the job uniforms can just be done away with. A miner's pickaxe could just be strapped to the body (hauled) instead of being treated as an equipped weapon when not in use. They could be used as fallback weapons, if needed (e.g., a marksdwarf who just ran out of ammo might switch to his trusty woodcutting axe.) Civilians might buy their own knives and such once the economy is back in.

iirc mining is a combat skill in some complex fashion that leads to legendary miners being able to take down sieges.

That's because pickaxe attacks use the mining skill, unlike the axe and woodcutting split. Not sure how that relates to my post.
