A Dwarf Adventure. (An RP Tale)
« on: July 15, 2014, 12:15:47 am »

So a some friends of mine came over this evening to hang out (we are all avid RP ers and have played DF in the past.) So after a few hours of playing skullgirls and street fighter one of my friends asks if we want to do a quick RP in a low fantasy setting. My other friend and I agree and we think up characters for the RP my friend comes up with Francisco a human merchant and head of a republic family falling on hard times and I play as Urist Gryphoncrest a Dwarf Hammered and personal bodyguard for hire.  I decided to play him as dwarf fortressly as possible. The DM sets the scene for the two of us. Francisco has hired me as his personal bodyguard as he goes to talk to the head of a rival family Peter P. Picasso about a business venture between the two of them.

We enter Picasso's personal offices and I wait outside the room as Francisco enters to talk to Picasso about the business venture. Picasso wants to buy Francisco's ship and crew to go on an expedition for him after some intense negotiations Francisco agrees to rent his ship and crew to Picasso as long as he personally oversees this business venture. Picasso agrees then makes a nation and Francisco gets beamed in the back of the head by a ruffians with a sap but manages to cry out to me in the other room. I kick in the door, disarm the ruffians of his sword with a natural 20 and help up Francisco who is infuriated by this attempt to kidnap him. Picasso explains it is because he wanted to keep the true purpose of the venture a secret, he found the treasure map of a pirate king and after more negotiation agrees to let us have a cut should we bring it back. Specifically he wants a certain ivory sceptre of great craftsmanship and wealth. At first Francisco refuses and Picasso being the way he is tries to get me to defect from my bodyguard duties to help him find the treasure. I rufuse on the ground that dwarfs are not oath breakers and that "By dwarf law breaking a contract is punishable by a hammering." Picasso frowns but agrees to Francisco's demands for a larger cut, overseeing the journey, and the use of his own ship in the mission.

Fast forward a week in game we are ready to embark on our quest to find the pirate's treasure and head down to the docks to set sail. As we get to the docks Francisco notices something is off about his ship his crew has been replaced by one of Picasso's who is also down at the docks to wave us bon voyage.  Francisco asks him the meaning of this and he replies that he agreed to use Francisco's ship but by renting his crew he was free to replace them at his leisure stating he trusted his own men but not Francisco farther than he could throw him.

At this point my younger brother came and joined the group as a seaman halfling named Skullyboop or Skully for short. He and Urist immediately hate each other and it doesn't help that Urist easily gets seasick and the crew is rationing the rum and grog for the full journey. After a week or so at sea morale is low, but just as Urist is about to snap they find the island they are looking for and a search party of 15 including the ships captain, Skully,  urist,  Francisco,  and the ships doctor head to shore to search the island. The map is crudely drawn and the island provides little for the search party with only Urist remaining happy because of coconuts which he loves immensely.

After a few in game days we finally find some gold dabloons and start digging only to find a hidden door which spews a purple haze when opened. Francisco and Skully are to frightened by the haze to continue but Urist dwarfs up and goes into the breach along with the captain and two others. There are traps along the way but they get disarmed and we come to a fork in the road. We decide to take the left path and about halfway down we trigger a pitfall trap which dumps me and the two crew members down a winding tunnel into a boiling lake, the captain avoiding the trap preemptively and letting us fall. Lucky for me I roll a natural 20 and using the bodies of the two crew men manage to get to shore with minor burns. The first thing I do is make a burial mound for them so that their spirits don't haunt me.

Meanwhile Francisco and Skully man up, grab a torch and descend into the hole after me and the captain but they take a right at the fork and come to a supposed dead end. I, Urist, manage to find my way to the treasure room but cant see anything but I can smell something... natural gas. At this exact moment skully finds a secret panel in the rocks and presses it opening up the dead end to the treasure room. The GM allows us reflex saves. BOOM! A huge fireball erupts as the natural gas ignites singing Urist and Skully  who took cover under the treasure and turning Francisco to a barely alive crisp of a man. Think Anakin Skywalker burnt. It is right then that the captain finds the treasure room, the barely alive Francisco and the wounded Urist.

BIG REVEAL TIME! The captain reveals that Picasso knew that the scepter wouldn't be in the treasure room but instead in a second treasure room only accessible by sacrificing two beings to open it. He begins dragging the unconscious Francisco over to one runic symbol in the room and demands Skully to apprehend me. A brawl between the two of us insues and I manage to roll a natural 20 again to throw a gem stone at the captain and knock him out. Then I easily overpower Skully and knock him out as well. Rage overtakes Urist and he picks up a large stone off the ground, drags the unconscious captain over to the runic symbol and smashes his head in. Skully wakes back up only to prove that his allegiance is only to the most powerful person in the room and defects to Urist's side. The two then grab Francisco and haul him up to the surface only to be confronted by the rest of the crew who demand to know what happened down there. Urist gives them every detail from the captains betrayal at the trap, to the explosion, to the sacrifice and the fight, the crew proves themselves as loyal as Skully and defect to my side as well. Francisco getting medical triage from the doctor.

Over the next few days we empty the catacombs of the treasure just in time for the first mate to come from the ship to try to claim control of the expedition party. Urist informs him of the events as of recent and escorts him down to the treasure room where the first mate tries to convince Urist to break his oath, sacrifice Francisco, and get the sceptre so that they can return home and complete the mission.Urist replies that he is no oath breaker and the first mate tries to flee. Urist and Skully block his exit and he jumps into the water in a panic only to get heavily boiled. Urist drags the poor man over to the sacrifice runes and mercy kills him. This opens a staircase to under the treasure room showing a great shrine to a blood god and the ivory sceptre on a pedistal in the middle of the room. Urist swipes the sceptre and makes a run for it as the staircase begins retracting and the room flooding. I escape but lose a foot in the process and fall unconscious.

When I next wake up i'm on the ship headed back to the docks to complete the mission. Francisco is barely still alive having both legs amputated and burns on most of his body but alive. I have the sceptre in hand and command of the crew as skully was third in line for captain. When we finally get to harbor we get a summons from Picasso to see the end of our mission but I refuse as both Francisco and I are still heavily wounded. He comes to us instead and boards the ship. At this point I will now give the actual dialogue.

"Well did you do it? Where is the scepter? " Picasso asks. "Oh I got it right here ha'ant left me side since 'e left the island" Urist replies lifting the scepter from under the sheets of his hospital bed. "Well give it here and the contract will be complete, quickly." Picasso asks hurriedly, greed in his eyes. "Was all this worth it to ya? Everything for this scepta? " "Yes now give it here dwarf!" Urist hands the scepter to Picasso much to the angry grunts of protest of the now mute Francisco.  "You can keep the treasures. " Picasso says offhandidly as one would say keep the change to a waiter. "This is worth more than anything in that pile." "Twas hopin you'd say tat." Urist responds as he lets out a loud whistle. "Were setting sail boys!" He yells out to the crew as they raise the drawbridge and weigh anchor. "What is the meaning of this?" Picasso asks angrily. "Ya see we have a verbal contract, our first contract ended when I handed ya that sceptre. Then you said keep tha treasure. The treasure was anything we found on that island including that scepter there. We have a verbal contract and the punishment for breaking an oath Is A Hammering." Urist says a grin creeping across his face as fear sweeps over picasso's.

THE END.

TLDR; I RP as a dwarf with friends and hijinks insues.

So tell me what you think community did I do well? I had fun with it got plenty of lucky rolls and had a good time. So good or bad tell me what you think.

I think this should be in the Creative Projects thread, but I'm not sure.
It's actually a pretty cool story though, I'll give you that.
