Legendary wrestlers
« on: July 14, 2014, 11:43:32 pm »

I drafted several peasants to army, give them armor, axes and leave in barrack to train.
After a year they became skilled axedwarf and legendary fighters.
Of coursse they are prefer to engage in handtohand unarmed combat that lasts for ages instead of making one deadly axe hack
How to train them as legendary weaponuser?

Make sure that they all have weapons. Double check.

There's been a lot of reports lately of this sort of behavior in .40.x.  It seems that creatures prefer striking with their limbs and using wrestling moves more than weapons now for some reason, even if they're more skilled with their weapons than they are at wrestling.  I'm guessing it's a balance issue / bug.

Or are you using .34.11?

I've noticed most bandits are wrestlers, as a related point in support of this theory.

I've had a similar issue in my fort. In the military screen it will show the dwarves as having a sword equipped, but they have none in their inventory. They DO train sword usage VERY slowly, but seem to train wrestling faster. All this despite not actually having a sword.
Haven't been able to figure it out myself.

It's because they manifest a sword using their mind.
Mhmm.

I noticed this while doing some combat testing in the arena. Dwarves have always occasionally thrown a kick or punch into the mix but from what I've seen, an armed dwarf with a high level of skill in their weapon of choice will attempt to hit their enemy with their weapon under half the time. (I'm just estimating this from looking over the combat logs rather than actually tallying every blow.) Expert weapon users with no fighting or wresting skill appear to be more likely to attack without their weapon than with it which definitely seems buggy.

It's really thrown off my weapons efficacy and divine metal testing. Just to make sure, this has been reported properly to Toady?

Post a screen shot of the dwarf's inventory, maybe?  Mine assign and equip their weapons, but they train wrestling more than they train their weapons.  Some of them, at any given moment during training, will have their weapons "in hand", while others have their weapons "strapped to upper body".  I'm not sure how to make them favor weapon training and weapon combat.  Maybe it's a bug that Toady will have to fix, or maybe there's some trick we haven't figured out yet.

Looks like bug 7063 covers it.

Everybody was kung-fu fighting...

It also reminds me one NPC troll from Ultima Underworld, who used to say: "Using weapons is cheating."

Also, this:

The entire content consists of senseless murder, a pile of faceless naked women and zero regard for human life in general, all in the service of the protagonist's base impulses. It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.

Most Kobolds I have encountered are wrestlers, too, but that may just be because they're not a fully developed race.

Oh, it's even worse than that. Checking the combat logs from my dwarves when they spar, I see numerous instances of "The Wrestler grabs the recruit with his -copper mace-" or some such. I'm struggling to picture how that works.

Also, are others seeing that sparring reports are no longer separated out under the blue headings? Very annoying now that I constantly see that red C pop up and I have to check the reports to know whether it's just my militia sparring or everyone being murdered in the dining room.
