hunting

hey guys, is hunting broken in the newest version? for the life of me i can't get my hunter to go kill things. she has a crossbow, a quiver (filled with bolts) and the hunting labor enabled. there are grasshopper men on the map, which i assume are huntable(?) though in my last fort i don't think i could get it working either, and there were birds of various types constantly wandering through the map. am i missing something really stupid? it always worked before.

Beast men are sentient, and dwarves don't eat (and therefore won't hunt) sentient creatures. If animals like lions, tigers, or bears (oh my!) should show up, your hunter might be inclined to leave the booze stocks and throw some bolts around.

oh. thanks. are there any reason they won't hunt ravens? there were 5 or so constantly on-map in my last fort, and my hunter wouldn't go after them either. for some reason, they never moved though, they might've just been too high, maybe?

IIRC ravens won't provide any meat on butchering so again they aren't worth hunting.

OK. hunting has resumed as normal now that there are a few mountain goats. apparently terrifying ones too, because the hunter keeps screaming about how he must withdraw. heh. thanks for the help guys.

Hunter's discipline is too low to do the job. Need to throw around some corpses or assign the hunter to a squad for a while and get it trained to stand its ground.
