Yes I lost 2 of my starting 7, and have one more that has escaped purely by being really GOOD at climbing.  All of them went off into the deeps before I thought to set up a meeting hall.  One fell and broke a leg and starved to death (no problem with that, except him being there in the first place).  The other one just... forgot how to get home.  First I knew he was tantruming, then starved.

The skilled climber saw acres of lake in front of the cave areas, said "I can get over there", and just took off.  Wouldn't come back (or do any set jobs) for long enough that I was seriously worried he couldn't come home.  After the second Thirsty flag and first Hungry flag went off, though, he just scampered right back across and got some sustenance *boggle*.

In .34 these caverns WOULD HAVE BEEN very safe... lots of long vertical drops with no slopes, etc.  As it is, I have no idea what is going to come climbing out of the depths, but I worry that one of my Flying Wallendas is going to attract the attention of the numerous troglodytes my hunters (and 'u' key) have sensed in the depths.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

The only time my dwarves climbed when I had destroyed the wagon/had no wagon and had not yet put up a meeting zone. The idlers tend to wander around aimlessly then anyway, and they might not care for the pathing cost of a tile then.

This matches my experiences.  Maybe there's some default meeting zone up in the stratosphere, and dwarves are trying to climb up to reach it...?  (I've heard of stranger bugs.)

I think you will avoid most cases of climbing as long as you have a meeting area and your dwarves have no need to idle outside. I haven't had this problem yet, the only climbing dwarf I've seen happened when a pit was made between the dorms and the food stockpile. It was cool how he just inched across the wall over a deep chasm to get to some beer.

Agreed. The only time I've run across the climbing issues with trees was when I tried a no points embark. As we all know, those require dismantling the wagon, and . . . I lost a guy to drowning because he fell in a pond.
