Hey, so, clueless newbie here.

I've got a blacksmith who's been having a strange mood. He claimed a forge, and just sat there. No demands, no gathering items. Then he went insane. I crashed out via the relationships screen bug and reloaded the old save  (cheating, I know) to scroll through the announcement log for any demands I may have missed. None. Not one. I checked burrows. I thought I had placed him in the metal industry burrow, but I hadn't. Any ideas regarding this? I'm at a complete loss.

Demands appear when you [q]uery the workshop he is in, not in announcements.

The "demands" you're thinking of appear in the announcements when nobles desire a specific type of object in a specific one of their rooms. They are completely different from strange mood "demands", which only appear in the workshop screen as Katarumi noted.

Workshop claiming appears to be a bit buggy in v0.40. I had a moody dwarf "claim" a workshop from 10 tiles away; if he was then prevented from reaching that workshop I'm not sure what would happen. Make sure your waiting dwarf is actually standing in the workshop he's claimed (the [q] menu should state that the workshop has been claimed).

Also, if your moody dwarf requests something, and you make it available, but your dwarf doesn't go fetch it, the material probably teleported into the workshop. You can verify that the material is in the workshop with the [t] menu, then move on to the next request.

OR it could be something like cloth. Your dwarf will request cloth, but not specify plant, wool, or silk.
