Retired dwarves not building?
« on: July 13, 2014, 08:43:02 pm »

By accident, I selected "Play Now!" for my new fort rather than "Plan the journey carefully." Not having the skillset or equipment I wanted, I decided to just leave the dwarves to build their own fortress, reloading them every so often and then retiring them- I've also played a few adventurers, including one who killed the leader of the only human civilization and half of a hamlet. I'm into summer now, but my fortress hasn't built anything. Is this as expected?

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

I haven't played the latest version, but I'm guessing they don't automatically set their labors.

they don't automatically set their labors.

It would be unfair on Toady and unfair on the player, if the dwarves were to gradually build a giant fortress similar to what a player would build without any management, and it's also unfair on the player because not everyone wants their symmetrical, perfectly laid out fort to be dug into by clueless AI (the dorfs are silly enough when you're watching them very carefully)

But I, too, am yet to play the newest version.

I wonder...do Dwarves in retired fortresses actually consume food?

Nope. I actually just checked this. At least over time scales of a few months in-game, the food stockpile was untouched.

Non-loaded sites seem to exist in some kind of metabolic stasis. Dwarves don't eat or drink, sure. But also, the seeds that were in the ground months earlier were still there, and started to pop up for harvesting as soon as I unretired. And a horse foal wandering around underground that doesn't seem to have gotten hungry in that time.

From what I understand sites are supposed to develop slowly without player interaction. Perhaps it takes an extended period of time for the sites to evolve?
