.40.02 playable?
« on: July 12, 2014, 09:15:56 am »

I have played adventure mode a lot, but never really got  into the fortress mode. Is the latest version at least reasonably stable?

The entire content consists of senseless murder, a pile of faceless naked women and zero regard for human life in general, all in the service of the protagonist's base impulses. It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.

Set autosave to seasonal, create a back up. I have yet to have a crash with .40.02.

You sometimes need to disassemble and rebuild the Still when it refuses to brew beer despite haveing
enough plants and barrels. Except of that, yeah, playable.

Some people experience weird fps drops. If you do save restart df and reload, if that doesn't work go online and complain....that always works for me

Use small worlds with short history until Toady optimizes the active world running.

I can't really recommend starting a serious fortress since I experienced crashes in each one I built. If you are ok with restarting at the beginning of the season a few times then go for it. Many players, me included, also have huge fps variations (basically every time the calendar is updated if I understood Toady) so don't forget to set history length and world size to the minimum. If it doesn't affect too much your game (murky pools, ...), turning off weather really help too.

I've had a problem in both one game on .40.01 and my current game on .40.02 where one of my dwarves doesn't wanna do anything, no matter what labors I turn on. In .40.02, the dwarf eventually disappeared and was reported missing, but it wasn't like he'd been dead before that - I checked him repeatedly, and he was just... wandering around.

So that's been a little weird. I haven't seen anyone else report this problem, though, so... dunno.

I think I remember seeing a post where you could either activate them in the military send them to a burrow and that will reset their AI and when you send them back to normal they start working correctly.

I did a little experimenting, and I was able to run a small world with 300 years of history with no lag whatsosver. Seems like a good standard for me.

I thought Autosave had a save corruption bug attached?

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Fixed in .02, BUT I still don't trust it.

Fortress mode has worked very well for me. No crashes yet.

There are a few oddities with workshops getting stuck and needing to be 'reset' (often ordering them to be deconstructed then cancelling the order enough), occasionally a dwarf gets stuck trying to harvest a plant or cut down a tree and you need to cancel the designation to un-stick them. And... lots of odd stuff happens, but a lot of it is as much entertaining as frustrating.

Play fort mode with the minimap off, the mystery babies can crash the game if the minimap's turned off. Mystery babies are getting fixed in 40.03, fortunately.

I've had no problems with corrupted saves or fps, but, necromancer siege arrived and promptly sat around at the edge of the map, carrying a few living babies. They've been there for months and not attacked. Possibly related my own military dwarves are refusing to man the defense burrows. They stand in the booze stockpile in the Great Hall getting sloshed instead of manning their posts. I can post them up manually but they wont defend as well as train in their usual active alert.

Has nobody else experienced this? It made me think sieges were broken but if its operating fine for everyone else maybe it was just that one fort that was broken and I'll make another one. Disbanding squads and making new burrows everywhere did nothing.
