Morale and badassery
« on: July 11, 2014, 07:12:35 pm »

I'm wondering what are your experience with the new morale center.

Ok so I have the flying manimals (sparrow me) stuck in the air so I built a small shooting tower an mobilized my 'army' ,4 axemen (though only 2 have axes, and 1 mail shirt) and 3 crossbowmen (all with master crossbows and.....wooden bolts), So it seems they are pretty disciplined despite the fact they are utter noobs with NO training, other than the commander, who is adequate discipline and accomplished axeman. So far I've killed 3/7 and have only 1 morale break, with the crossbows, I've realized that apparently my manager is a Rambo with a crossbow, he received the first kill, well technically it was the ground since he just took the wing out. Even when his report said he was terrified he still stood there shooting at the sparrowman until he killed the last one. But the reactions are interesting.
"We are so fragile.....begone fear!"
"Death is all around us!"
"Has the tide turned?"

But now I've demobilized my military, but right before I did I noticed that they had red flashing arrows anyone know what it means.

Probably sadness for the red arrows.

Yeah, it's sadness. Maybe from being terrified, maybe from being on duty too long, maybe both.

Being terrified is a lighter blue arrow. Or maybe it is a darker blue arrow.

I've had my archers jump off of the safety of their shooting positions to flee enemies who couldn't get to them before they jumped off of their shooting positions.

So... archers are the same as ever :P

No before they ran at the enemy, now they make a strategical movement in the opposite direction.

Interesting, so your commander had high discipline and all his troops stood their ground?

Among the axedwarves, yes, among the crossbowmen 2 ran but regrouped as soon as the got near the commander, though it may be a fluke, they were about 30 x/y/z squares away from the enemies, but only 10 away from the bodies, they moved about 15 squares mostly down.

I've tested a couple of times, it seems that the squad leader doesn't seem to affect whether or not the squad will regroup or flee. So resaults are you can't have 1 bad ass keep your entire army from running like elves making a strategical movement in the opposite direction of the enemy.

I had 2 accomplished leaders with accomplished discipline leading my crossbows and axes, both squads fled, except for the leaders.

So question, how does one raise discipline quickly.

I think there's a theory on that. Leadership may affect the chance of a squad running away/regrouping, while discipline seems to be personal. I don't believe it's been confirmed.

I wonder if military tactics effects anything now?

Evil rain (blood, slime, etc) do raise discipline by a small amount (but also terrifies people).

I managed to raise discipline slightly by ordering a single squaddie to attack a herd of yak in an attempt to get him killed and nail down a possible bug with the expedition leader not being replaced. He didn't attack them, but he did gain some discipline skill. I didn't keep the exercise running long enough to see a skill gain, but he went from not to dabbling. Perhaps dwarves could be exposed to a terrifying enemy that can't pursue them, like a giant sponge aquarium in the barracks or something.
