Hey all, I am back after a bit of a break from the game.  Some may recognise me, as I used to be quite active on these forums, but real life and videogame add ended up with me kind of ignoring DF for a while.  Anyhow, with a new version out I have played more DF in the last few days than I have in the last year it seems.  In my time playing recently, I have realised that there are a few things that I have never done in DF, and figured this would make a good topic starter for my return.  The list is small, but some of the items would probably be considered major by some peoples standards.  At any rate, here goes...


Things I have never done in Dwarf Fortress:

• Played without some form of non ASCII tileset or graphics pack...
• Played or even entered adventure mode...
• Looked at legends for a world...
• Built a wheelbarrow, minecart, or rail system...
• Used burrows...
• Extracted anything to make poisons or salves or even made a vial...
• Engaged in anything related to beekeeping...
• Built or used a siege engine (thanks for reminding me, Cyroth)

I think that about sums it up.  Just about everything else possible in dwarf mode I have done, but for whatever reason, I have never gotten around to doing anything on the list.  Some of the items I feel a little ashamed about (tilesets:cough:), but for the most part it has just been a matter simply not getting around to it.  So does anyone else have anything they have neglected to experience in DF that you want to share?

Killed or captured a dragon.
Had a monarch arrive.
Had a full squad in adamantine.
Not fucked up my minecarts horribly.
Gone entirely trap free.
Built a megaproject.
Killed a bronze colossus in fort mode.
Built a pump stack.
Intentionally killed a dwarf.
Let an offended Elf caravan deprive me of much needed booze and cloth.
Successfully explored an overrun fort as an adventurer.
Had a proper necromancer siege.

Intentionally pissed off other factions
Built a pump stack
done a megaproject
Figured out how to do anything cool with magma or water
Bothered with aquifers
Thrown animals into pits, magma, etc
used a danger room successfully
Built aboveground structures other than walls, roads, or bridges
Successfully embarked in evil areas

Everything I ever do in fortress mode is almost always painfully "default"
I I've never been sieged by a neutral race
I've never offended elves
I've never seized items during trading.
I've never pumped magma somewhere else for any reason.
I've never used the justice system
I've never trained someone to a "experienced" soldier.
I've never started a major ranching/farming operation (hunting and fishing are automatic and are basically infinite? Sign me up!)
I've never started a archer squad (well, not one that actually ended up using crossbows at-least)
and I've never made a webbed cage, danger room, a pit (that was a pit, and not just for getting animals out of a cage), or drowning cage.
Oh, and I've also never had a vampire.

I've never played fortress mode.

Looks like fun...  I've done everything on the above lists except for:

Extracted anything to make poisons or salves (I've made a vial, but never did anything with it)
Engaged in anything related to beekeeping
Successfully breached the HFS
Had a full squad in adamantine. (At least not in a full set of adamantine armor)
Intentionally killed one of my dwarves.
Successfully explored an overrun fort as an adventurer.
Intentionally pissed off other factions
Thrown animals into pits, magma, etc
Successfully embarked in evil areas (I've done half evil, half neutral though)
Made a webbed cage

In addition, I've never:

Modded another race to be playable
Built an atom smasher

I have never gotten past the "basic stockpiles and workshops" stage in Fortress mode, and therefore, anything that comes in later.
I have never slain a megabeast/titan/demon in Adventurer mode.
I have never played a major mod like Masterwork.
I have never played a succession game. (though I plan to)

 
On a second thought, I have not done a lot of things in this game...

- Conquered the HFS. Breached and attempted yes, but never conquered. And neither have I dined down there as an adventurer. Yet.
- Used siege weapons successfully.
- Weaponized magma. (don't hit me please)
- Fulfilled a demand of a noble. (at least not on purpose)



There is not much else I've never done.

After about 20 total Fort games, I have yet to go as far as to:

Making a pump system.
Taking advantage of natural energy (mills and such)
Making use of magma.
Making use of military orders and training grounds.
Surviving a siege.
Enclosing my dwarfs in a secured fortress.
Make an aboveground castle (that actually looks like a castle).
Taking advantage of a noble Manager.
Using a railway system for minecarts.
Trying out a lot of different labors on dwarves other than base (woodcutting, brewing, mining) ones.

There's still a lot more I have to learn. The complexity of this game is what makes this game unique and the best/most realistic game there is in my opinion~

Well killing a roc is as simple as giving it a good couple of kicks to the head to knock it unconscious, and the pulping handles the rest. (And it's even easier if you use a weapon!)

-Survived past the first night in adventure mode.
-Made anything useful out of adamantium.
-Successfully made a magma pump stack.
-Made a decent army.
-Siezed anything from traders.
-Not pissed off the elves.
-Explored an HFS fortress.
-Used the justice system.
-Had a hospital perform a successful treatment.
-Extracted anything to make poisons and salves.
-Done anything with pottery, glass or fabric (other than strange moods).
-Survived more than a week or two after releasing the HFS.
-Plugged an aquifer.
-Played with a tile set or graphics pack.

Ok, I'm sorry but I'm cringing at every "never played adventure/fortress"
This saddens me. (A bit less on the fortress, though, as I had to play quite a few adventure games to say I got the way the game controls to feel good enough)

- Never seen a hydra
- Never breached a multilevel aquifer successfully
- Never gotten full adamantium armor on a single dwarf, let alone squad
- Never breached HFS
- Never built a working minecart system
- Never built a pumpstack
- Never built a successful waterfall (i.e., one that "just worked" and didn't cause needless drama, stop working, kill dwarves, or cause trouble in some other way)
- Never played adventure mode for more than ten minutes

while I have not done way too many things in either fortress mode or adventurer mode to count (im more than a bit of a noob), I wanted to say about rocs because somebody mentioned what it took to kill them...
Just last night I tried to kill a roc. What ended up happening, was that it got to the edge of my vision, I moved one step to the right to get a better position and....
died instantly because it somehow managed to kill me in that one step.
