I view people who can't get by without DT the same way I view fat people whining about having to walk to the bus. Yeah, walking is hard, it's not that hard. That being said I have a really laid back attitude when it comes to assigning labours. 'Does the fort need anything right now? No? Well then, you people get to go do whatever until further notice.' If you're more ocd about that kind of thing I suppose I understand your pain.

LOL I don't whine about the walk.  I do wine about standing there if my knee injury acts up and the bus is 15 minutes late and I've been standing there a half an hour.  But anyway, I admit I got spoiled by Therapist.  It's great when you have umptiscretch migrants with no needed skill and you have a huge amount of smoothing and engraving to do.

I learned how to play using the vanilla interface. After I learned the basics I switched to using Therapist and other utilities. I only use the utilities to make tedious tasks less tedious or automate repeated tasks. There's no reason to submit yourself to a bad interface (unless you're a masochist).

Therapist didn't spoil me, it just "didn't torture" me.

It's like you're faced with a set of stairs and an escalator. DT is using the escalator. Vanilla is the stairs, right? NO! Vanilla is looking at the stairs and escalator and going "Pff! Wusses!" and deciding the climb the outside of the building to your floor and break in a window.

Workshop profiles lads.
Q over workshop and P I think(you need a manager in nobles screen). Set minimum allowed skill to whatever level you want. Allows you to make everyone a mason and mechanic for wall building and trap stuff but only allows your skilled workers to make the goods. Works for most professions.
I pretty much just enable all skills on everyone as they enter the map (except farming, plant gathering, hunting, mining, fishing and medical labours) and just use workshop profiles.
Shift + (...whatever the enable key is) to enable entire labor categories.

Haven't figured out how to quickly find the most skilled military/civilian dwarfs yet. A little more information on the (u)nit list would be lovely, lots of blank space there.

Therapist is a million times quicker though...

That actually sounds like a really good system.  I will try that out next time.

^ There's literally no shame in using Therapist, and I deeply, deeply hope anybody who says otherwise is being an Epick Trolle.

I can name a bunch of things Dwarf Fortress needs, and people getting looked down on for having the game their own way and wanting to eliminate some of the utterly needless frustration and tedium of the UI is, uh, not one of those things.

In my day, we didn't use these pansy keyboards. 
We used toggle switches to set the bits each word, like real men.
And didn't put up with no girly punch cards either.

I view people who use toggle switches the same way I view fat people whining about not being able to reach the remote control. I only play in the purest, most principled way by manually toggling bits on my processor with a needle.

Saying things like this is just as rude as looking down on people for using DT. It all depends on how you play the game and how important keeping your dwarves organized is. For some people, yes, Therapist DOES make that much of a difference. But for others, it just makes it a little bit more convenient, and it's not a huge deal when it's not available.


I used to use job utilities myself, but when my favorite one was deprecated, I realized it wasn't tremendously helpful for my own playstyle, so I just stopped bothering with them.


That being said, I do agree that the vanilla UI could use some improvements for large-scale dwarf organizing for those who like to keep their dwarves organized.

Not really, that's literally all you do. Best guy dies lower the level so second best can use it. You can also do different workshops for different skill levels. I like to do one workshop that accepts dabbling to master masons to turn out blocks and another that takes master to legendary. The newbies crank out stone blocks while the vets crank out furniture and the pro's There's no reason my novice masons can't churn out blocks but I don't want them making substandard furniture.

DT doesn't do anything but take away from some tediousness. There's nothing special or honorable about looking at every individual dwarf, and micromanaging their jobs with the built in tools. One of the reasons this game has gotten so popular despite being difficult and foreign to most people is that the community is very accepting, elitism really goes against that spirit.

In fact, we should really say, that beards are born with babies.  Since beards are sentient it is quite possible they style themselves or even that they grow styled.
I'm totally convinced dwarven babies are born with beards. How those get braided, combed or shaved before birth is one of the arcane dwarven mysteries.
