Incredibly Lazy Dwarves- Is this a bug?
« on: July 11, 2014, 09:27:21 am »

So before throwing this on the bug tracker I would like to make sure it is, in fact, a bug.

So I started a new fortress in the new version (0.40.02) and I've dug out a nice start of a fortress, made a stockpile and even breached the volcano, netting me magma at the cost of my least useful miner and his pick.

The problem is, only ONE dwarf is doing ANY work right now. I've been trying to get the miner slabbed so he doesn't come back and strangle my other dorfs, as well as get all the booze/food/etc. into the actual fort, but only one dorf is even attempting hauling labors, and the stonecrafter refuses to even look at the workshop where the memorial slab is waiting.

I've disabled stone/wood and gems from my stockpile while enabling everything else and 90% of our booze is just sitting out in the open. The five dwarves who refuse to work are literally just hanging out in their bedrooms doing nothing.

So, wtf is going on here? Is this normal?

In dwarf fortress, if it leads to the eventual death of all your dwarves, it's probably normal.
Try moving the dwarves to a burrow and then deleting it, that might refresh their AI or something.
If they don't even move to the burrow, then yeah, something is really wrong.

It's a reverse hostage situation, if you kill the snatchers they'll fill your fort with babies.

The conditions when I've seen that can be..

If burrows are involved, and preventing access.
Labors are not enabled per dwarf, for the expected activity. (you'll need mason & stoneworking, IIRC)
There are no workshops (in this case, craftsdwarf workshops & mason workshop) available.
There's no manager, but that's unlikely during the first year, as tasks are auto-queued.
All the raw materials (in this case, stone) are forbidden, often after dumping.

No burrows at all
All the labors are enabled that should be enabled
I made the workshop
No manager obviously
Huge amounts of stone just lying around errywhere.
Hell I even did a reclaim designation on all our crap just to be sure, nada.

I...really have no idea wth the problem is. Errybody so lazy.

What do the information screens say about their personalities and stuff? I've noticed the more aloof dwarves are more likely to slack off and not pick up jobs (low discipline?) And nervous dwarves are more prone to fleeing in terror from an attacker...

I'd guess that Lich is correct. Dwarven personalities affect how often and how hard they'll actually do work. You may just have gotten a particularly lazy bunch of dorfs.

If so, I'd just delete and start over. You can wait for migrants if you feel like it's worth it. They might be harder workers.

What would it be like to live in a world that was copy/pasted? Would we even notice? If not, how many times have we switched celestial harddrives or whatever?

Two things:
Check the workshops to make sure none of the materials used in the construction are marked as forbidden.
Another thing that may reset their AI is to briefly draft them into the military. (Disclaimer: This will probably affect their moods negatively, I don't know what the new personality system does with negative thoughts yet.)

When you say "lazy", what jobs are they showing as doing? "No Job"? Or something else?

Isn't engrave a slab an engraver job?

It certainly was in v0.34.  Probably still is.

BFEL just realized this.

Oops.

See, this kinda thing is why I made a "is this a bug or not" thread.

When you say "lazy", what jobs are they showing as doing? "No Job"? Or something else?
Yup, "No Job" despite there being PLENTY of hauling work for the little bastards to be doing.

But yeah, the slab thing was definitely me failing. Still not sure bout the slow hauling, but then that IS kinda normal.

Check the (o)rders for whether you have forbidden food hauling, and see whether the stockpiles are cluttered with seeds. Those two are the most likely culprits.

When I have had buggy hauling behavior in the past I have found that deleting the old stock piles and re-designating them can sometimes work as can just creating new stock piles that will accept the materials you want moved.

Is all the stuff still under the wagon? Is gathering from outside allowed in the (o)rders menu?
